Recommend me a modem+router
October 16th, 2013
ive been having a few problems with it such as it randomly restarts and doesnt port forward properly.
So i’ve decided to buy a new router.
I’m gonna need a modem+router.
I have 4 wireless and 1 wired device max that can we connected at one point.
also i have adsl2+
So can someone please recommend me one please.
here are two websites of stores near my area.
http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=c&p=modems
http://www.eoneonline.co.nz/results.html?q=router&ppp=1000
My budget is around $150ish.
it can go up depending on the deal.
please help.
p.s. i kind of would prefer that the router has QoS. but its not necessary.
also if there is a better option that is not available on one of the sites please mention it.
Get a Linksys! Then install DD-WRT firmware.
Make sure you get one that is IPV6 capable.
A lot of modem/routers are only capable of IPV4, so a lot of people are going to be stuffed over the next year when ISP’s have to change their systems.
(A lot of major ISP’s are struggling at the moment to get manufacturers to release updated firmware)
My ISP uses Thompson’s (Bethere) and they are rolling out the IPV6 upgrade next month, Thompson have provided them with updated firmware, but my ISP uses weird firmware anyway as they use adsl2+ annex A & M.
*Edit – you can probably just stick your Thompson in bridge mode (if you can get the firmware upgrade) and get a decent router, eg ASUS RT-N56U

i cant really use my old modem as it would still disconnect randomly and not open ports. so i need a suggestion for a new one.

i know its not hard. i have done it on a old linksys router i have.
plus what i am looking for a is a modem router. which i dont think supports the dd-wrt firmware.
plus im not keen anyway. ill rather just use it out of the box.
Also, as you didn’t specify what wi-fi you wanted, I recommended a dual band router capable of N with up to 300 Mbps. You could save money if you wanted less. (and had been more specific)
What is your ISP, can you upload their IPV6 firmware in a rar file (if it’s on their site) so I can take a look at it.

oops forgot about that. im thinking of getting N, even though none of the devices i use are compatible, (maybe the laptop and the comp)
and i looked on my isps website couldnt find the firmware.
my isp is Telecom

i know that the software release for my current router is this
Product Name: TG585v7
Software Release: 7.4.2.7
if that is any help
