RAM: 4 x 512 vs 2 x 1gb – Any difference?

August 5th, 2016

Is there any difference other than cost?
Cheers

Shouldn’t erally be a difference, since they would both work in dual channel mode. As long as they’re in pairs, it’s good. But 2x1gb is better becuase if you want to add more later, you can just add some, and don’t have to take out some first.

4 x 512 MB tends to run at lower speeds on older(or just crappier) MOBOs. (333 MHz vs 400 MHz). So most people tend to just go with 2x 1GB instead.
Personally just for that reason I’d go for 2x 1GB, it also leaves room for more memory upgrades in the future.
Answer #3
with 4 512’s you can’t add any more, but the other one you can add another 2 1GB’s further down the line.
Answer #4
Always less sticks = better performance when comparing the same amount of memory but there are exceptions.

Not always. Only with older motherboards that’s the case. Or just crappy ones that aren’t as good. (Gigabyte lolol). But yeah in most cases they run exactly the same. The only reason why 2x 1GB will always be better is that it leaves room for more upgrades in the future.
