protecting links via safelink

I guess it’s a noob question but still,
I see a lot of uploaders protecting their links via safelink and I don’t understand why.
What are the benefits for uploaders to use safelink?

Because it isn’t shown nowhere on the site… That’s my guess.
Anyway, I don’t use it as I haven’t found it useful, and users hate it
