Play HD mkv files on BluRay Player

So there are all of these HD Movies in .mkv format out there, usually about 400 MB
My question, is there a way to burn these to a disc so that a BluRay player will play it? Did some Googling with no results. Ultimately I’d like to burn the file to a DVD -R if possible
I don’t know the model number, but it is a Samsung BluRay Player

If its got a USB port usualy no burning is needed just mux and copy to a hdd
