Original Xbox doesn’t recognize disc.

January 25th, 2020

So I finally got a couple of original xbox games. Both games are near perfect condition. However, one game works and the other isn’t being recognized by the console. I am able to play audio CD’s. At least I know that it is able to read discs. Perhaps the original Xbox is very picky when it comes to reading discs and that the discs have to be in flawless shape in order to work.

The xboxs came out with different modal dvd’s (Phillips and Thomspon are the two I know of) They each had their strengths but the Thompson were better (especially post chipped) at reading the best range of discs. All of that said your drive is old at best, and the laser is probably getting weak. Finding a new drive is a mission, and would be dearer than buying another xbox. You can use a PC dvd in the xbox (ide is easier.) but the yellow power wire must be plugged into the original xbox dvd, and you need a splitter cable to power the pc dvd from the hard drive cable. Unfortuneatly this means that the xbox cover has to be left off. There is a circuit that can be built to plug into the yellow wire so that the xbox `detects’ the dvd drive and then the original dvd can be removed and the pc dvd installed. I cant find the links to that for myself but xbox-scene and after-dark are places to start as they used to have it.

That sounds like a tedious mess to have to go through. I may be better off buying an original Xbox from either Amazon or Ebay for around $50 or so.

that may be true but think of the Tales you could Tell!
You try disc cleaner? Whap a Tap ?(a couple taps on box) NES blowback? Hmmm… Trying to think what else I’d do… I’ll let ya know

Update:
I just tried Ghost Recon (original Xbox version) on the Xbox 360 and the game worked fine. So why would the original Xbox read the NCAA Football 2005 but not the Ghost Recon disc?

I don’t know why, but I actually have 3 original Xboxes couple of them read some games and not others…
