Not able to get real 3d effect?

So my friend downloaded some half sbs 3d movies but when he plays them using powerdvd 11 he does not get the real 3d effect
There is some depth in those movies but not like the real 3d movies as if the things pop out of screen
Its like 2d movies converted into 3d using the covert option available in powerdvd although he has tried all modes available in powerdvd
He is using Dell XPS L702X 3d laptop to watch these moves

It is possible that the H-SBS was a 2D to 3D convert. Also, there might be some scenes with Out-Of-Screen (OOS) effects, BUT mostly there wouldn’t be. Most 3D pictures have a perception of ‘depth’ (you would be able to perceive the distance) rather than OOS.
