What exactly do you mean by “crashing”?
Slow in what ways? Also, I suggest you get your HDD checked out with the following app:

Well in this case the first thing for you to do is to reinstall Windows. Probably that will solve all your problems.

So you want him to reinstall the OS based solely on a presumption that it’s virus/spyware infested?
You do realize that this involves a lot of time & effort, Right?
If his HDD is at fault, This would be a major waste of time (I’m not saying that this is definitely the case of course, But nevertheless, It’s worth looking into before even considering a reinstall.)
Answer #4
install hdd sentinel..check whether your hard drive has bad sectors, bad sectors lead to slowness and blue screens, if it is faulty, replace it and re-install windows

You bet your ass It’s the easiest solution. At least when you know how.
In the end, it takes a lot more time to try to “fix” it in other ways.

Application crashing or OS (BSOD) crashing?

It’s very hard to troubleshoot a pc over the internet…
Open Task Manager and click the performance tab to see the CPU and Memory usage… Mine idles at 5%-8% CPU & 1.24gb memory used…
If either is reading high open the Processes tab and see if you can tell what is using it up…
Avast Free is a good AV but doesn’t catch everything, I would also install Malwarebytes and maybe Trojan Remover and run a scan with them…

Format will solve MOST of the thing thats going on I format my pc every 2 months to keep it fresh and running at the max since my pc can do the format real fast. Nothing is wrong with a format once in a while.
Op already spend hours trying to fix it and 2 hours today doing so. It will take him an hour or so scanning for virus etc so why not just take an hour to format it and make it new?

Yes a reinstall will fix almost anything but not always what the user wants to do..
Sometimes you need to get it running better just long enough to save your non replaceable data…
I used to make a clean install then install the apps I used most.. Then make an image with Ghost and could do a complete reinstall in about 5 minutes…
