Looking for new External/Internal HDDs
September 26th, 2013
Which other manufacturer is dependable? I hear Seagate has a pretty horrid reputation, but I’m not sure.
They are all mostly made in Thailand, except hybrid drives which are made in Taiwan (which was hit by a typhoon). Wait until March or so when the prices start to return to normal if you can.
Seagate, Samsung, Buffalo, Hitachi and Verbatim

Verbatim makes HDDs? Wat?

Verbatim makes external HDD and SSD
Seagate drives are pretty good in general. I have a 250GB drive which is about 7.5 years old which is used on a daily basis and it has my page file on it. I have another which is older, about 8 years old which is in another PC which is rarely used but is still working fine. There were a few Seagate models which got a bad reputation but on the whole Seagate make some reliable drives although they are not that fast.
I had an Hitachi which failed after less than 18 months and I would not purchase another. A WD enterprise drive which started to fail after about 2 years.
All drives are kept very cool (~28C) in my case with fans in front of all of them.

My experience with Seagate has so far been pretty bad. All the Seagates I’ve had so far always had some sort of problem. I’ve had also had one WD die on me but so far my Samsungs are still alive and kicking. Oh and fyi Seagate has the fastest mechanical drives on the market at the moment.
lolz – I had troubles trying to RMA a hdd the other day as the returns centre was out of stock in the UK
They had to UPS one from Germany.
It’s the pick of the draw with hdd’s these days, I don’t think there is much of a difference in them. I’ve had issues with all the manufacturers I have got hdds from.
I have some really old Maxtors that still go strong. I’ve got a couple of Hitachi Deathstars that are fine.
I would never buy LaCie again – I sent a RAID enclosure (had their WD drives in) back for repair, and they sent it back with the case on upside down
I think the most reliable 7200 rpm mechanical drives I have had over the years have been Samsung (although they are in quite regularly used enclosures (Freecom))
I’d personally wait for March / April, as I am doing… as that is what the experts predicted the prices / costs of external / internal hard drives, will return to normal prices / costs.
Any all HDD’s are practically the same in reliability. But Seagate i prefer
I’ve had a good run with Seagate,
But I would be waiting til the prices come back down if you can.
It will be worth the wait, seriously.
I brought a 500GB internal harddrive (hitachi, which are usually dirt cheap) for 108 AUD
sooooooo bad
Prices are already starting to drop albeit slowly.
I use Hitachi and Seagate, never had problems with them and I like their performance.
Western Digital sucks, their external drives always spin down and their internal drives have slow write speeds.

What…the Velociraptors have slow write speeds, I don’t think so…
So that’s the new Western Digital Velociraptor hard drive. Do you have one?
I got a great one off of Ebay, straight purchase, 500GB for $59.99 plus shipping.
It’s a Seagate Expansion
The sellers company name is Nelco out of Ohio
Got here fast and works great! Going to try to get another one next month.

They are not that new. I’ve got a couple, but since using Seagate hybrid drives (Momentus XT) I much prefer them. They are the best alternative to SSD’s for performance and storage capacity at the moment. Although OCZ have a hybrid drive out, it’s damn expensive(1TB mechanical/100gb SSD about £300 usual price) I haven’t tried one yet.

I would see how that one goes before buying another, I have seen poor reviews of them, but you were lucky with the price at the mo
