On GNOME at least as soon as a HD is mounted it appears on the desktop. If not, just right click on the desktop and create a shortcut like in windows, probably directing it to /media/ or /mnt/
Ubuntu’s partitions are already mounted when the system starts. Only the windows partitions don’t mount automatically (the NTFS ones )
To mount them automatically, you’ll need to install NTFS configuration tool.

As far as I know, as of 8.04 the NTFS tool comes installed automatically.

my windows partitions moutn automatically … ntfs too … even read and write (i just get an file-rights error, but it still works)
but I’m using 7.10 … can’t remember 8.4 anymore ..
if there is the little green triangle on the hdd it means it’s mounted, if its mounted after the start just drag the hdd to the desktop and it will ask you if to copy, move, shortcut …

Yup, you’re right. But if not installed than install the tool and than enable the read write support.
