Installing New Hard Drive and Setting It Up

January 23rd, 2020

i just got a new internal HD (a Mactor Basics 160 GB HD with 8MB cache and 7200 RPMs)
and i have a Dell Inspiron E1405 Laptop
i talked to dell and they said my mother board can only support 100GBs
but the guy at the computer store said i can just upgrade the BIOS (which i have no idea how to do)
and
once the HD is in i have used Norton Ghost to Back up my current OS/HD
so how would i go about putting that on my new HD without having to just install windows first
also
i will want to setup like a 50GB partion, how would i go about doing that
should i do it now before i put anything on it, because dont you have to reformat?
Thanks for your help

Answer #1
what kinda crappy mb can’t support more than 100GBs?
Answer #2
ok back everything up 1st with norton ghost, then install your new HD inside your laptop.
To set up a partion, you just need to download somthing like Paragon Partition Manager, use that to set up the partitions you want. To update your bios find out the model of your motherboard and either type it into google or find the manufacturers website and download the bios update off there. Make a backup before you remove your old HD remember. I hope somone can explain a little bit better 1st and correct me if im wrong about anything. good luck.
Answer #3
how do i put the backed up OS (that i used Norton to get) on my new HD
Answer #4
ok well the HD i got is not the right one
the guy said it would work and it is way to big
so i think im going to just order one
but keep the tips coming so when i get it i can just zip through it
Answer #5
so what exactly are you asking for now?
Answer #6
haha ok
i just need to know how to set up the new HD
which will most likely be more then 100 GBs which is the max for my motherboard
and how do i put my Norton Ghost Back Up on my new internal HD, do i have to install windows first
Answer #7
to set up a hard drive, just plug it in and go, if you need to update the bios still, get it from the motherboard manufacturers website, as for ghost sorry never used it.
