I am tired of burning movies I downloaded.
January 20th, 2020
Thank you for your thoughts.
I use a Lacie (there are many brands) player w/ HDMI. I load files onto a usb stick and bingo, MKV or any file type I have tried works. I just bought the cheapest one I could find and it works great in HD or standard video. I think I paid 40 bucks or under.
Dont waste your money on a arm device, its allmost as cheap to build a htpc.

Just add ram & a psu & storage
where are u from, wolfman? if you happen to come from good ol europe, there r some pretty cheap media-boxes available. youd still need to transfer the files to an usb-stick, but it works great for me
just get a hd media player for your tv get the cheapest one off ebay store your mkv and avi’s on a thumb drive or a ext hdd and plug it into the media player and boom its on your tv, comes with a remote ahh i set this up for my parents they love it i come over like every week or so and put the newest shameless big bang theory movies etc they love they have a 1tb ext hdd hooked to a WD HD Media Player
I too got tired of burning movies I downloaded to DVD’s. It cost me a few bucks but this is what I got to solve that problem:
Dune HD Duo Media Player. 2 TB hard drive for music, 4 TB hard drive for movies, with plenty of space left over for future acquisitions. All I have to do is copy the movies or music I downloaded to the hard drives and watch them on my HDTV or listen to them on my stereo. It plays every kind of video or music file out there.
I got it in 2010 for $400, hard drives not included. One of the best investments I ever made.
@
yea that is pretty sweet but you know what for less than 400$ I could have got a Media Player and Ext Hdd and it would also be in beautiful 1080p..
What brand you had in mind? My Dune can play 1080p but it depends on the TV you’re using. My TV is 1080p. It spoiled me. Now, I try to get all my movies in 720p or 1080p exclusively even if they’re 6 gigs or more. Space is not a problem.
i have a WD HD media box plays in 1080p via HDMI with a 1tb ext hooked to it…i do the big rips too we have a 65″ toshiba so i do alot of the 13gb+ 1080p MKV files also
So if you have a WD HD why do you do have to burn movies then?
I still do it for friends and family
Here’s a little cheapie from China that has some good revues..

when i don’t want to burn an avi { for family } , i just copy to a usb , plug the usb into my dvd player , which is connected to my tv , and play it …
I have my external HDD (USB of course) connected directly to my Sony Bravia…Works perfectly

That’s about the weirdest contraption I have ever seen! LOL!!
Looks like a waste of money, but I guess if you have the money to buy junk like that… so be it.
To the creator of this thread, burning movies is so ancient, as for me I have my PC linked to my HDTV as a secondary monitor, which I use my 4 TB USB drive to view my TV shows or movies.
Or I connect my laptop to my HDTV an view my media files from my USB storage from there.
Normally I copy over to a usb stick and watch. I have over 4tb of movies.
I was given a Sony Bluray player with wifi as a gift and its been perfect for me. Combined with Serviio I can stream every movie I have to it and it looks great. Who needs a USB stick : P
Wow, you all gave some great advice here. I am going to look into all suggestions and will let you know what I decided to do when I do it. A couple asked where I am, I live in the USA.
Thank you all for your time to respond!
I just use my tv and a usb hardrive. If you have a Samsung tv. Try plugging in a usb hard drive into the usb port on the tv, and play the movies right from the hard drive.
Works for mine. The tv has a built in player. It will play all movie formats. mkv,avi,mp4,mpg,divx,xvid,vob..everything I throw at it. except for .flv. flash video.
What’s burning a disk mean? lol! Disk are obsolete here. Forget some scratching up disk. haha.. I don’t even have a dvd player. except on some pc’s.
Or, you can also plug your pc into your tv using a vga cable into the tv’s pc input. Then plug in the sound cable.. it’s like a headphone jack on both ends. or like an iphone sound jack cord thingy. what ever it’s called. lol. Or some newer pc’s have hd output.. use that if so. Then you can also install xbmc on your pc. and use iphone or android for a wifi remote for xbmc. Then for xbmc install icefilms,1chan,veetle from xbmc forum and watch stuff straight from the net. xbmc is actually free too. and works nicely. or if you have the pc connected to the tv, you can always just play the movies on the pc movie players and watch on the tv. xbmc is fun to play with though.

I am the original poster and this was the first thing I tried as it was something I could do without making a purchase. I also a have a wifi Bluray player made by Sony so I went to Serviio and downloaded their 22 MB program and installed to my computer. I then made a path through the program to my movies and went to the living room and turned on the TV. Serviio showed up automatically and worked perfectly playing the .mkv files I had. YA!! Question for you or anyone else who uses Serviio. The download gives you the PRO version for 15 days. After that, it automatically goes back to the standard version. Is the PRO version worth purchasing for $25.00? Or really not necessary? Here is the website if anyone else wants to try it. I highly recommend it so far! Thanks again

For those of you that suggested a USB into the TV, Thank you. Unfortunately my Samsung HDTV has a USB port but only recognizes pictures and does not have a way of playing movie files.
For those that suggested a portable media player, Thank you! I am going to purchase one of those for my TV in the bedroom that doesn’t have a wifi capability yet.
Actually, I never even noticed that you got a free 15 day trial lol. Looking at what the pro version offers though it does seem like it would be pretty cool to be able to stream your movies over the web and it looks like you only have to pay a one time fee? Cant say I would really take advantage of that myself however. I do love the software, it even connects to online meta info databases and sorts the movies by actors, directors, etc. I think I read somewhere that Sony recommends it as well.
As a side note though I wasnt able to play every single format I had until I switched my device profile from a Sony bluray player to a Sony Bravia 2012 smart tv. So, if you ever do have an issue you might try changing the device profile but it sounds like youre doin fine, glad my suggestion helped you out : )
Thanks again for all suggestions. This topic can be considered “solved”. Reading all responses I realize I was really behind on the times! I am still liking Serviio and will continue to use it. I sent an email to Serviio and they said if you want to pay the one time $25.00 fee for the PRO version it would last for several years until they updated to version 2.x. If I still like the software in 3 months, i may be tempted to send them the money to support the cause.
Thanks again!
myself I just use a usb stick in my foehn and Hirsch dvd player which I got off ebuyer fo about 50.00, had it about 3yrs, still works great, plays mkv and everything else I chuck at it, for a slightly better viewing experience I plug in my lappy to hd telly via vga and use media player classic with the cccp codec pack, never failed me yet.
I use the Sumvision Cyclone Micro 3 media player. It has 8 gb (i think), but I tend to plug in a usb stick or external hdd.
It’s full HD and supports almost any format.
You can get one about 30 on Amazon/eBay.
Weirdest contraption you ever seen? That’s one point of view. Another is that it’s the best device I ever seen. What can be possibly wrong with a device that has hard drives that you can put all your movies and music on to watch of hear on your TV or Stereo plus network it to any device in the house that has Wi-fi to boot? Not for nothing, I think your set up is weird.
or if you have the pc connected to the tv, you can always just play the movies on the pc movie players and watch on the tv. xbmc is fun to play with though.
This is what I did. After a while buying blank dvds started to add up so I threw some old spare parts together, hooked it up to my tv, and installed xbmc. With a wireless network card in it there’s no problems watching stuff directly from the network. I also had an old android phone that hasn’t had service in almost 2 years and I use it as a remote. All in all it costed me next to nothing and I ended up with an htpc that works surprisingly well.
You could install the Plex client on a jailbreaked Apple TV 2, and install the plex media server on your computer and then stream from your computer to your tv through the apple tv. http://lifehacker.com/5879191/what-should-i-use-for-my-home-theater-pc-apple-tv-nettop-old-computer-or-something-else
