How To unlock Full “res” For 36.in HD TV

November 30th, 2013

I currently have a 36.in HD TV I am using a my primary monitor, problem is resolution is does not go any higher than 1024X 768
I see the highest in my GFX card properties is 1440X 900, as well as my desktop properties.
But when I try to select any resolution higher than 1024X 768 it won’t take an it restores back too 1024X 768.
My 26.in PC monitor has a max res at 1920X 1200, so why I can’t up my res for this HD TV?
My graphics card has a max resolution support of 2048X 1536, so I can’t see how I can’t achieve higher res on my HD TV?
Is the TV’s resolution locked, because I searched through some menu’s on the TV an see no area’s for the feature I seek.

Answer #1
Is the TV 720p or 1080p?
Answer #2
Are both monitors plugged in? Disable the other display.
You seem to be stuck on 16:10
or try create a custom resolution in the driver control panel.
Answer #3
A 1080p HDTV will have a resolution of 1920×1080
A 720p HDTV will have a resolution of 1280×720
I have a Samsung 32 inch 1080p HDTV. I was playing a video game on my PC monitor which has a resolution of 2048×1152. I was also playing the same game on my TV. The TV’s resolution is 1920×1080 which is the maximum resolution it will give. A monitor won’t have as big a screen as a TV but it does have a higher resolution.
Answer #4
Wait…you didn’t think that because the TV was larger that it would have a bigger resolution did you?
I assumed you had a 1020 x 1080 and couldn’t select the resolution..
Answer #5
Using 60Htz refresh rate ? That would be normal..
Look at your user manual or Google it to find the res of your TV.
Answer #6
what input are you using ?
what happens if you boot with just the TV connected ?

My thoughts exactly. If your using VGA, the TV will probably limit the resolution to 1024×768 like most do. If you use HDMI/DVI the resolution will be the same as the TV be it 1080p or 720p.

I am using a VGA adapter that connects from my PC too the monitor.
could that be the reason why I am not achieving full rez?

Nah, that’s not true. I’m using a VGA cable to connect my HTPC with a 9600GT to my 50″ Sammy plasma that’s 1080p and I don’t have any issues.

some old HDTV’s are limited via VGA input. my old 1 was :p
Answer #12
I am using a VGA adapter
that should be OK
the VGA connection on some TV’s can be limited, tho my, and prozac4312’s, are “Sammy’s” which don’t have that problem
but have run into some others that do
VGA is your only option ?

You are both right. I have a friend that had the same issue of low resolution, so he got rid of his TV (32″) and bought a 27″ monitor. But he didn’t live near me, so I could not help him diagnose the problem.

I wonder, if the TV was limiting the VGA resolution, what if you used a D-Sub/DVI to HDMI adapter. Would that trick the TV into thinking its HDMI?

TBH, this information should have been included with the original post.
I don’t know why we gotta pull teeth to get the basic details of a problem =(

To be honest, that it the main reason why I don’t offer anywhere near as much help as I could in the help desk.
(The other reason is people not using the search here or Google to help themselves first.. probably not applicable here, but it still stops me helping other posters.)
It’s just too much trouble trying to get people to give all the details they need to in order to resolve their problems.
(Maybe WBB could institute a ‘help format’, a basic set of requirements for the first post of a help request??)

If I knew the make and model of graphics card, I could benchmark it as I have a very up to date scale ration piece of software from the industry.
PM me if you need more help friend.
Answer #17
if u cannot achieve your full resolution with VGA, try using a DVI->HDMI adapter (if you have a dvi output).
