How to secure wifi with wepkey? [SOLVED]
November 27th, 2013
WEP isn’t very secure, as it can be cracked in a mater of seconds by someone skilled. Use WPA2 Personal. It depends on your router, but usually you can get into settings by going to 192.168.1.1 and going look for security settings.

I tried but i can’t get into the settings of my router?
The configuration access page will be different on each router, eg 192.168.1.1 is normally used on Linksky’s.
What is the make and model (you can just read the instructions if you still have them for this) ?
WPA2 is much more secure than WEP

Win+R > cmd > ipconfig
Look for the Default Gateway of the network adapter you are connected to your router with.
Open your web browser and type the default gateway in the address bar (ex.192.168.0.1).
You will need the router’s username and password to access the interface.
That can be obtained by looking at the router’s product information you received when you acquired the router.
If it was provided by your ISP, you can alternatively contact them.
If it has been changed from the default, you must know the password it was changed to.

Yes, you will want to set a WPA2 passkey, at least like 12 digits in length.
Look for a wireless options or settings tab. You will be able to choose the type of security and set a passkey there.

I use “D-Link DWL-G122 wireless usb stick” together with “D-Link High Speed 2.4GHz (802.11g) Wireless 108Mbps Access Point”.

You will need to be a bit more specific than that, but you can try
192.168.0.1
192.168.1.1
or use the method posted by SmAsHeDr.
I’m not sure if you know your default login ?
You may need to update the drivers for the dongle (direct from the D-Link site), and perhaps the firmware for the router.

You know what’s weird?.. i enter a wpa2 key via the picture i posted but still after that when i click on the network in the right under corner it still says it’s unsecured.. .
Here it is:
You need to set the security setting in the router first

Why do I bother posting?
I explained in detail how to determine your router’s IP and set your password.

Which one is it man because if it’s “84.194.224.1” then i got bad news because i entered it in the url bar but i get no connection..
Edit: 84.194.224.105 doesn’t work neither..
Assuming you are using the the DWL-2100AP (or hybrid) you should be able to access your router configuration settings by typing …..
http://192.168.0.50
…. into the search bar. Then simply change the settings to wpa (as previously sujested) in both the router/modem and any connected devices …. pc’s, mobile phones, games consols … etc.
If you can’t access the configuration page using that address post the make and model number of the router/modem, and not the wireless stick, and we will have another look for you.
The default username should be admin
The default password is not entered by default ….. leave blank.
( Once you have accessed your configuration page SET A LOGIN PASSWORD )
Look at the sticker on the router and post the model number, FFS
Looks like youre connected directly through a modem…interesting

I tried to get in the settings but still.. i can’t go inside and i get always the message that there is a problem to load the page i want.. .
To be sure i disabled everything like avast and malwarebytes but still i can’t enter the settings.
I think it’s the best i’m gonna buy a whole new wireless usb stick today?Or should i buy a router instead of the access point i have now?Or maybe directly a LAN cable? But if i want a LAN cable i have to buy a router because i still need a wireless connection for my playstation in de sleeping room.
gilly replied: Look at the sticker on the router and post the model number, FFS
I looked and here’s the modelnr.: DWL-2000AP+
Is that info enough or do you need other nr’s too?

I use a wireless connection with an access point of d-link that is connected with a cable to the modem.
As paul6011 said, it is 192.168.0.50 – connect your pc direct to the d-link with an ethernet cable.

What browser are you using, try Internet Explorer
I use firefox but i also i tried with explorer too but it was the same result..
Hey guys i just bought another wireless usb stick from dlink and it works great but still i have the problem that my connection is not protected.
Via the wireless connection manager of my new usb stick i CAN get into settings but i don’t know which one i have to choose for WPA2 key because there are a few that looks the same .
Here’s an image:
Btw:if i choose WPA2-PSK i get the choice of choosing “TKIP” OR “AES” and i don’t know what that means..
Btw:if i choose WPA2-PSK i get the choice of choosing "TKIP" OR "AES" and i don't know what that means..
Thats only the type of encryption you will use, either or …. won’t matter, personally I would go with TKIP
Hey guys i just bought another wireless usb stick from dlink and it works great but still i have the problem that my connection is not protected.
Thats because (as you have already been told by another member) the connection is secured at the router/modem …. thats where you set it up. Then you would adjust your settings on your pc to suit, thats what you are trying to do at the moment, and is also why you lose network connection when you do change.

Yes man that’s true.. everytime i try to secure the connection with a key i loose connection.
But it’s ok i called with somebody that works in an internet company and i’m gonna go to his home with my router and he’s gonna set it up because it’s really not my level of pc experience…
STILL THANK YOU ALL!!!!
The problem is solved by a friend of me that works in an internetplacement company..
What was the problem, then ?
Nel replied: What was the problem, then ?
The problem was just that i couldn’t get into the settings of my modem!
He just got into it and changed IP and network name and added a WEP key..
cool – glad you got it sorted
