How to monitor and control my home internet network?

December 10th, 2013

Hello guys,
I am annoyed to the extreme level, i have some cousins at my house and everyone is using my wifi full on, i need control over my wifi back, see who is using how much bandwidth and speed, and restrict them.
Is there any easy way? I am using a Linksys wifi router, model WRT54GS Ver 4.
Thanks!

Get DD-WRT firmware for your router, and you set QOS.

how does it work? does it install in the router itself?
And thanks

Just Google it, there are docs for installing it.
PS: If you can’t Google it, you probably should not do it, there is always the possibility of bricking your router when flashing firmware if done incorrectly.

Yeah i had googled it, its not a quick setup, requires like more than an hour to read and do all that, so will do that some other time. Meanwhile isnt there something easier and quicker. Btw how do institutions like hospitals and unis manage their network?

“how do institutions like hospitals and unis manage their network?” with alot of hardware you cant afford and people that know what they are doing …
Couldnt resist, sorry… As SmAsHeDr said, QOS is what you probably want to setup.. you may not have to install dd-wrt or any other custom firmware if your router already has it, really depends on which model you are using, also your router may not even be compatible for installing cfw ..
back to QOS – from wiki “Quality of service is the ability to provide different priority to different applications, users, or data flows, or to guarantee a certain level of performance to a data flow. For example, a required bit rate, delay, jitter, packet dropping probability and/or bit error rate may be guaranteed.” .. basically, you can set the priority of applications / port ranges / computers.. for you I guess all you would need to do is set your pc to the highest priority and no more slow inet on that machine .. I used to use it back in the days when uk wasnt so ~love~ and could d/l torrents 24/7 without getting capped, basically just set torrents to lowest priority and you could hardly tell connection was maxed out.
edit: If you have ever set cpu prioritys in task manager it works pretty much the same way, like if you have an app usinig 100% of all cpus and cores (3d rendering etc) then the pc is pretty much unusable, set the process priority to below normal however and you can continue to work on pc without noticing much difference in useability

SmAsHeDr’s is the best way to go about doing it – you might even learn something by reading
or, simply change the passphrase for the security setup, and don’t tell it to your cousins

Last time I flashed a router with DD-WRT I think it took me about 10 minutes.

If I remember correctly (I use to have a WRT54G v6), the default linksys firmware either didn’t have QOS, or had very poor QOS options. Then again, I didn’t use the default firmware for very long. DD-WRT not only makes your router more powerful, it runs faster =D

At the router dood. DD-WRT gives your $60 home router the same capability’s of a commercial router. The docs are pretty detailed, and you can Google it all up before hand. I had a friend that was scared to do it for a long time until I finally made him do it, then he saw how easy it was and kicked him self in the but, lol. As I mentioned before, there is a possibility of doing it wrong and bricking your router, but if you can follow instructions, it should be very easy.

Well, after reading all your posts i feel confident and want to flash my device, i can follow instructions well but am still scared because i dont want the router bricked, i remember the same scenario when i had to jailbreak my iphone, i followed instructions and everything went all right, but still there was a window of restore there so the device was safe.
I read the forum, hardware details at dd-wrt site, they want me to update the router, hard reset it and upload the firmware. But the thing is those instructions are very detailed and there are many download files there, nowhere mentioned what to download etc
After reading them, i decided to give my cousins full speeds and wait for them to go home.

I had googled the site name, and found this page http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installation

DD-WRT is indeed a good solution. I’ve found that Tomato’s QOS is rather good too. It’s much simplier, and works on older hardware too.
