How to extract srt from mkv

August 23rd, 2013

Hey guys,
I have mkv file with subtitle as track. the font of the subtitle is too large. so i tried to edit the subtitle size from tools (im using vlc) but that didn’t help. Then i tried to extract the subtitle with both mkvExtractGUI and mkvTool (the command line) and both give me not valid subtitle file.
so does any body know how to make the subtitle in small size, or how to extract a valid srt file from the mkv?
thanks

Use MKVCleaver

Srt subs don’t have any size information in them so it’s definitely not that which is causing the problem. The MKV container does contain information about the character set but no size info so that is highly unlikely to be the problem.
It’s most likely your media player so try a different player such as media player classic (if you have the necessary codecs installed) or KMPlayer/Pot Player to see if that solves it.
I’m not a fan of vlc. Far too many problems.

In VLC, go to Tools -> Preferences -> Subtitles
There, you can adjust the font size to your liking.

didn’t work, same as mkvExtractGUI.

are you sure you extracted the correct file.??
http://filext.com/file-extension/PGS
http://file-extension.paretologic.com/detail.php/File-Extension-pgs
btw can you give the name of that movie release.??
Answer #6
Are you sure the subtitles aren’t hardcoded?
In VLC, go to Video -> Subtitles -> if it doesn’t say “Track 1” or something and the only choice is “File …” (or something like that) then the subtitles are hardcoded. (i.e. they are part of each and every frame of the videos (no, not those that do not display subtitles obviously ))
Answer #7
@OP The file must have been hard-subbed. In which case the subtitles cannot be extracted out.
