Extract identical AVI from DVD

January 24th, 2020

How can I do this? I don’t want to convert anything, just a direct DVD to AVI, the bigger filesize the better!
Answer #1
DVDs use .vob files which use the MPEG2 codec.
Many players will play these, including stand alone DVD players and PS3, so try it out.
Also you could just try changing the extension from .vob to .avi, you never know!
Avidemux is a simple app that converts files or just containers ….Try leaving the video and audio to copy and setting the output to .avi.

But remember though, that when a player sees an .avi file it would normally expect it to use the DivX or Xvid codec..
To do that, video conversion must be used…Avidemux and Freemake video converter are good for that.

My goal is to do hardcore editing in VirtualDub and I don’t want to lose any quality on the DVD copy. I haven’t been able to get VirtualDub to recognize anything but vanilla *.avi files.
If there isnt an easy way to do that, could you suggest some good video editing programs for serious touch-up?

DVDFAB will let you make an avi file. That’s if you’re wanting to rip from an actual dvd. As for being identical, not sure. But you may just have to make it the best you can. A bigger file size doesn’t necessarily mean better quality.

Right, I basically just want the contents of the Video TS in an avi container so I can edit it.
Answer #5
Just use DVD decripter in IFO mode and file splitting to none, that will give you 1 big vob file then use virtualdub mpeg to do your editing.

Answer #6
you need to import the “Video TS” file/s to and editor as MPEG2 (their current format)
edit, then save as AVI
AVIdemux can import VOB/MPEG2 files and save as AVI
