Help of computer experts needed!

January 22nd, 2020

I think of myself as a very knowledgeable guy in computers and similar things, in fact, I’m studying hardware engineering year 3. how this is even possible??
1 week ago my Megaupload got stolen, thankfully when the email gets changed they give u a link to reset the last change, and I did so and got it back, looked at logs in the account and there was an IP from Malaysia last logged.
I thought this was it but,
Today at 2:48 AM i get a new mail, i check it and its from steam support saying that changes to my account are successful. unsurprisingly, my email and password for my steam account which has 5 games were changed.
INFO TO SAVE hassle:
– I never use the same passwords.
– I am a security freak, I REALLY choose hard passwords (example one of my old ones was Qw3r$$Tyy&Q1234Law3l, you see what i mean…)
-I have Webroot Spyspweeper and Kaspersky Internet Security installed and daily full scans nothing found since ages.
– Vista sp2 installed, well maintained and updated daily.
– Never visit porn sites from this pc, i do from my phone.
– Never /torrent/etc… on other places than which to me is more secure than microsoft.com
-No dodgy programs are installed.
– User Account Control is always on.
-Always change password for sensitive stuff like paypal etc…
BUT:
one thing is worrying me is that i have a wireless internet router, ive got the normal password thingy, and a MAC address filter too, I always check logs and NO mac addresses are logged other than the family pcs.
I study at university and sometimes log from their wireless but I got windows network discovery turned off so other users cant even see me, and if they do, sharing is disabled…
Can anyone please tell me if its the biggest coincidence and worst luck ever in the history of mankind or am I freaking out or what??
I am seriously considering switching to Linux when not playing games, like, permanently….
Im really scared, please take this topic seriously and help me !!!
Anyway, I’ve now deleted or de-activated all my important otherb accounts since this cannot be a coincidence, two different things hijacked in the space of 1/2 weeks…

Never use wireless things when it’s possible to use cables.
The reason I say this is because it is much easier to hi-jack passwords via a wireless system rather than the use of cables.
For someone to hi-jack passwords when you only use cables as a route of transporting information, they’d need to manually and physically alter the wires, which in most cases are underground.
Hi-jacking via a proxy while using cables is also possible, but since you are taking precautions, this is highly unlikely.
Try shredding your entire system (if applicable) with a secure deletion format, such as the 35-pass Gutmann method. Then, reinstall whichever operating system you are using, but as soon as it’s installed, try to grab a version of “Deep Freeze” and install that.
Deep freeze sets a separate section of you HDD and “Freezes” all the settings, configurations and software, but you are still give the chance to do things “normally”. However, once the system is reboot, any changes made will be gone and the “Frozen” state will be restored.
Also, a password on your BIOS will make sure noone can access personal/private data without you knowing. A lock on your tower would also prevent anyone having access to your computer.
Take my advice if you may and use it wisely.

I completely and fully understand your situation, I am the one who people turn to when they get things wrong online, but trust me, you are just another part of the cycle and it could happen to you, because it happened to me.
@ &
That was particularly helpful, I will be trying these things, thanks a lot.
I’m happy I got some serious replies, not just those lot who always wanna take over threads with their unspeakably funny humor.

The best thing that you do if you have important files is (this is what I do):
– Kaspersky
– Router WEP/Mac Filer/firewall
– Key scrambler
– PGP encrypted drive/virtual disk. – Encrypted FF password manager

This topic has been posted in the wrong section.
Moving from Off Topic to Helpdesk.

It’s obvious that you have been keylogged. You have to realize that some viruses are FUD (undetected by AV). You should do a clean reformat, and not depend on kaspersky and such to protect you.

Router WEP/
WEP can be broken into within minutes.
Use WPA

To elaborate a bit further on some others previous posts…perhaps enlighten some folks, and try to stay within this topic…
Yes, with say linux and the right wireless card (atheros, for instance) one could find even a non-broadcasted network and crack the WEP key, whether 10 or 26 digits in from a just a few minutes to a half an hour (and even WPA with another method and a more time). Which just could be what is happening here. It could be hard to trace…for instance by spoofing the MAC of one of your family computers, after knocking it of the network.
Once in, for one example…there is the ability to steal cookies (i.e., facebook, myspace, paypal, gmail, etc.) which can then be injected into a browser to access a site as that individual. Maybe this is happening to you. Or perhaps, as mentioned, someone’s planted a keylogger or similar malware…which most are coded/designed to run “stealth”.
I would recommend two programs to everyone:
SUPERantispyware & Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Both offer great free protection and find things that the big names don’t. I personally use them along side my A/V and have tested them beyond the scope of what most users would throw at them.
Hopefully this helps, at the least as a view from a different perspective. I’m not posting this to debate, scare (or tutor), but I can assure you, firsthand, all of this is easily possible. The safest thing is to not use wireless, period.

thank you.

i have been keylogged once, rapidshare hotmail gmail, and all others were all hacked, so i would suggest to install a key scrambler
Answer #17
Change your password. If still this happens, your PC might be affected with keyloggers
