HDMI connection between laptop and TV flickering?

So my girlfriend recently got a new laptop, which is running Windows 8, and she just bought a HDMI cable to link it up to her TV. Now, when we duplicate the screens, everything is fine. However, when I try to set it to extending the monitors, the laptop screen remains fine, but the TV begins flickering and is unusable. I don’t suppose anybody has had this happen to them and has a solution for us? Many Thanks,

what are you trying to do watch a film from laptop on tv or trying to use tv as second monitor.
as far as I know all it does is mirror the pc screen on to tv you can’t use it to extend your desktop screen.
Did you try changing the TV resolution to a lower one from Laptop graphics card Panel?
I managed to solve the problem before seeing the responses, sorry! All I had to do was change the laptop resolution down slightly and for some reason it fixed the flickering on the TV. Thanks for your responses though guys!
