Good .mkv to .mp4 conversion programs?

September 7th, 2013

So far I’ve had a large amount of experience with .MKV to .MP4 converters, all of the converters I have used have mixed results. The biggest issue was the inconsistency of conversion quality. Sometimes the sound wouldn’t be in sync with the video (the sound from videos would be 2 seconds ahead of the video itself). The other issue was how long it took to convert the videos, a small movie could take 30 minutes to an hour to convert (which is how long the movie would probably take to watch).
My system is fairly fast, so it can’t be my hardware that is processing stuff slow. Below is a shortened DxDiag of my system:

I am curious if any of you have found converters that have worked well for you and without any errors?
I am getting a video iPod this holiday season and I’d like to fill it with my movie collection (100gb+), but I don’t want the conversion to take months to complete.
Please don’t give suggestions if you googled a random converter, I’d like personal experiences with converters.
Thanks for helping.

I think I’ll watch this thread too… I have always had the same problems. Video and audio are out of sync, the video quality is poor… Ugh!
If I were you, I would do some research to possibly find a device that plays MKV files, instead of having to convert them all. Its your choice ultimately.

if the device plays .AVI then you can use MKV2VOB for a quick conversion.

Glad to know I’m not the only one.
In terms of finding a mp3 player that can play .mkv and has over 150gb+ of storage space – it’s impossible.

Actually, no.
I want to play them on the original iPod classic because it has a larger storage capacity (160gb). The iPod Touch doesn’t have enough space for me.

To be honest, I don’t think that the video iPod can play .avi files. I would prefer .mp4 anyways.

AVS Media Converter or Total Video Converter.
There are probably some better tools for conversion, but I’ve used both of these programs and they seem to do a good job.

I’ve used both in the past and had the same problems.
Any other program recommendations?

Have a go with Mkv2Vob (you can actually set it to give an .mp4 extension).
What it does is just take the audio and video out of the .mkv container and put it in a new one which should be compatible with most .mp4 players (A lot of people use it for PS3 and Xbox 360)..Because it does not convert the video itself, only the container, it only takes a few seconds to do..Well worth a try!

Handbrake is the best.

I would go with Nel’s idea, don’t convert the video unless absolutely necessary! It will save you a massive amount of time. The downside is that the file size will be about the same as it was so it would probably use up more space. Not a problem if you were only going to watch them and delete them but if keeping them it might not be the best option.
I have not tried these so cannot vouch for their effectiveness:
