You cant stream .mkv files to your ps3, thats why you need a converter.

Its Obsolete, We already have ISO Standardized H.264 containers which are widely used and supported.
Its a Non-Standard, Lack of codec definition means that there is no guarantee that any particular file will playback on any device. Its up to OEM’s to make their devices magically decode every codec past present and future.
Its Unsupported, Because of the above points Hardware/Software support is abysmal

Make sure you don’t upgrade to 0.9.4 as neither XviD nor the AVI container are supported in the latest release.
If you try the software suggested by HTShiftguy above, from mk2vob, be aware that this is a PS3 converter and whilst it will produce a file that can be MP4, AVI etc and will play via a PC many video recorders will not play it nor will an Xbox360. I am not a particularly techie guy but I beleive that this is because of the audio codec maybe there is a workaround or try another bit of software. Like many others I am also totally hacked off with MKV files, quality is good but if you want to play them on a video recorder or via Xbox then only way I have found is to use VSO ConvertXtoDVD4. This a very good program but takes a long time to produce a DVD and it is in Video TS and Audio TS folders. If anyone knows of a good quick programme to convert MKV to AVI that I can stream to my Xbox 360 then I would love to hear about it.

Been looking for a while to convert my MKV files to Avi, Riverpast video cleaner pro works perfectly, allows me to select which audio track and which subtitles too

It is not because they are morons it is because like you we all have to learn, I as a new user was not aware of its shortfalls (and I agree now with hindsight they are many) it looks like a good way to download files are half the size etc. It is only now when you try to use them that you realise the problems and seek solutions. Lets try to educate rather than name calling.

Yeah lets try to educate, All the credit for the great compression belongs with the MPEG and ISO for AVC and AAC which can be placed in MP4/M2TS/AVCHD etc.
MKV adds zilch bar unneccessry incompatibility infact the use of AC3/freeware encoders makes the compression worse. There consider yourself fully educated
DVDFab 6 can convert to whatever you want using the file to mobile options…(including mkv to avi!)
