External HDD reccomendation.
August 6th, 2013
What’s the best external hard drive I could get for 50-70 GBP?
My priority is for a sturdy hard drive rather than a fast one.
Thanks in advance,

You won’t get much with that budget at the moment, prices are still high. Are you after a desktop external (mains powered) or a portable ?
If you are after a portable, it might work out cheaper buying a 2.5″ 500 GB hdd and a seperate enclosure.
The best bang for buck I have seen recently, although it’s above your price range is in Maplins of all places.
2TB Seagate GoFlex for £99

I’ve got a couple of the 3TB ones as you can use an adaptor to use them with USB3 and they are really reliable so far. I only paid £20 more then that for the extra 1TB though, at the mo the 3TB one is £250.
You can probably get something like a 500GB in your price range, tell us if you want portable or desktop.
Stay clear of the WD Elements externals, they have major issues. Samsung are good if you can find one (Freecom usually have Samsung hdd’s in)
Edit – 500 GB Samsung portable £65 at Dabs

Probably after a portable as it’s for commuting purposes.
I’ve found this which seems fairly decent: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004XL53WM/sr=8-12/qid=1326562031/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1326562031&sr=8-12&seller=
At morgan electronics they have a 1.5tb for £65 including tax or they have a Toshiba 500gb portable for £47. Trusted company though I’ve never bought one of those hard drives though.

That narrows it down a lot
I’ll have a look around a bit later and come back and edit some possibilities into this post, I’ll probably find cheaper on my net travels
off the top of my head something like this is a good dependable drive
Samsung Spinpoint M8 500 GB

If you are carrying it about – I would recommend getting something like a caselogic case for it.
