Delete Unnecessary Vista Files

February 3rd, 2020

Here’s the deal. I have a little 80 gig HD, 20gb of which I have in music. Somehow, I only have 9gb left. I uninstalled Steam and WoW a long time ago, which were the only big files I had – the only program I have now that takes up more than a gig of space is a 2gb game.
Sooo.. where did all my HD space go? I assume Vista comes with a lot of stupid ~love~ preloaded and I would looove to delete any unnecessary stuff. Is there a program to use, or are there some features you all would recommend deleting manually?
PS as a funny side note, I defragged earlier and somehow lost 2gb of HD. Is that normal? Haha.
Thanks.

System restore is the culprit. Delete all restore points and disable the volume shadow copy service.

yea there really cheap to buy

Beautiful. That freed up about 20gb – Thanks guys. As for the external hard drive, I’m thinking about upgrading my dinky little 30gb Zune (had it since they came out, still works beautifully) to an 80 or 120 gig and just use that as the external HDD.
Thanks again fellas.
Edit: By the way, about how much room does Vista occupy out of the box? I’m just curious because I’m really only using about 35gb total, and if I have 25gb free, common sense would say stock Vista uses the other 20gb or so?
Answer #5
Yeah vista uses 20gigs out of the box and very ram intensive. If i was you i would download and use windows 7. it works like the clappers, uses like no HD space, not very ram intensive, can run any vista programs fine and its free! You just need a windows live account. Im using windows 7 right now and would not use anything else. Windows 7 FTW!

Wait, did you check ADD AND REMOVE PROGRAMS?
Go to Start –> My Computer –> Uninstall or change a program*
* – Should be located at the top, below the search bar, in the center.
Hope it helps.

Hah yeah the first thing I did was uninstall unused apps.
As far as Windows 7 goes, is there any reason NOT to use it? Instability, incompatibility, random bugs/errors since it’s so new?

I didn’t hear anyone complaining about it. As a user of win 7 myself, I’d say it’s a pretty good OS.

Interesting. Thanks, kyuubi. I’m going to look into how to install and stuff.
Oh, and I heard it is going to expire or something so your PC shuts down every couple hours, is that true?
Answer #10
Yeah exactly. The RC version expires on July 1st 2010 while the Beta version(s) expire on March 1st 2009. Image
