CPU Upgrade or just start again? Help Please.

August 19th, 2013

I am wanting to upgrade my cpu, I sort of know a couple of things but am not a genious on the matter.
I have a Gigabyte 8I945G mother board
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=1909#ov"
cpu socket LGA 775
1066/800/533mhz fsb.
No gfx card at this time as I am getting a new one delivered.
I don’t want an expensive cpu have looked a couple but am unsure.
So far have my eye on one of these 3:
1.IntelĀ® PentiumĀ® Dual-Core Processor E5300 (2M Cache, 2.60 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
2.Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 Dual Core CPU + Heatsink + Fan SLA8Z 1.80GHz LGA 775
3. Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 Dual Core CPU + Heatsink + Fan SLA93 1.60GHz LGA 775
do you need any other info? ?*?
If not could u recommend a dual core cpu at least, as I play alot of games. If nothing will work with just start from scratch and build new one.

If you’re going to be playing games, then don’t bother with the two lower clocked dual cores you listed, they won’t have enough grunt for the majority of things.
The E5300 is a better starting point but it doesn’t have much cache and only has an 800Mhz FSB which is ok, but your board supports 1066 FSB so might as well get a CPU that supports that bus speed.
A lot of this depends on how much you’re willing to spend though.

mainly will be buying from ebay unless i can get it cheaper else where. I try to do research on products before I even bid. Just wasn’t 100% on cpu and if my motherboard could handle a duo even. some decent ones going on ebay for under 50 bucks.
If i buy it bit by bit from ebay if I can’t update I think i could save and keep the wife happy lol. And yer an sticking with pci slots and gigabyte

I just checked their site, and they have a list of what CPU’s the board supports – it doesn’t support the newer C2D’s, or even some of the Pentium dual cores.

You might have to upgrade the board as well if you want a newer CPU.
EDIT:
Just noticed the eBay link, for $10 it’s worth buying/trying it in the board you have, even if it doesn’t work it’s not a mega waste of cash.

so i wouldn’t damage it if it fails. can i just put my old one back in and save that one for new motherboard i get?
Answer #5
The CPU won’t get damaged by doing that, if the board doesn’t like the CPU then it probably won’t make it past the POST check. The worst that could happen is that the PC just won’t turn on with that CPU in it.
Answer #6
ok cool thx for all your help mate.
Answer #7
I think the best that mobo/chipset will support is 9xx series Pentium D
Answer #8
According to a quick google search,CPUz didn’t recognize the correct model of your motherboard,I was only able
to find these models: GA-8I945GMH-RH/GA-8I945G Pro,None of em have an F6 bios with that date,You might have
better luck with Aida64,And just for the record,There’s really no need to speculate about the supported CPUs,The CPU
support list (on the manufacturer site) is there for a reason,But honestly,If you really think a CPU
upgrade will improve your PCs gaming performance,You couldn’t be more wrong,You’d need a complete overhaul for that.
