Block Googlebot from FTP

March 6th, 2014

Hi guys,
Someone is trying to access my ftp site. It’s masquerading as Googlebot and trying out different passwords. I don’t think it’s Googlebot, though, since Google says it’s bot accesses the site only once per day. This one is definitely trying out passwords.
How do I block it?
I’m talking about the ftp, not the site itself on my server.
OS: Linux

lmao, you will get bots trying to log on to your FTP server all day.

You can check the IP of the guy trying to connect and just block that.

Or let Fail2Ban do it for you automatically =D
That will not be the only person trying to log into your FTP servers. I run a few servers, and all of them have the same problem. Either configure your FTP server to ban, or use the mentioned software.

Best solution for me is to run my FTP servers on unusual port numbers in the upper ranges like 49021.
Servers on oddball ports are not likely to be discovered by port scanning.
