Best way to merge an .srt subtitle file with an .avi video

January 23rd, 2020

Hey guys,
I have a few movies I want to watch on my dvd player and I need the subtitles to be merged with the movies. without changing size or anything else. So which program is the best to do that?
And thanks in advance.

You can permanently “burn in” the subtitles, but after you do that there is no way to get them out of the movie or turn them off when you are watching it. One way to do this is to re-encode the file with Avidemux. Select “xvid” (or whatever you want besides copy) from the video codecs. Then click on the “filters” button. In the “subtitles” page, there are a few subtitle embedding filters, depending on what format your subtitles are in. Double-click the filter to add it, then select your subtitle and other configuration. Then you can preview the movie or close the dialog. Then select “file -> save -> save video” from the menu. After encoding, the subtitles will be burned into the new video.

You can convert the movie to MKV format, which supports embedded subtitles that can be turned on and off. If your DVD player doesn’t support the MKV format, then this won’t be of much help. I am not sure what software to use for this, as I don’t have much experience with editing MKV files.
Most DVD players that support AVI videos can handle SRT or SUB & IDX subtitles. The files usually have to be named exactly the same except for the extension.
