AVI to MKV converter

Hi guys
have my HDD filled up with lot many huge sized AVI DVDrips, need to cut the size down so thought to convert them to MKV instead.
Can you recommend me an APP to work this out ? and does not produces video-audio sync issues after conversion ?
please post a link too :).. btw my CPU is intel core 2 duo if it helps and 2 Gigs ram ( just so i noticed that slower machines ain’t that good for this conversion )

But where it says to set audio to Mono, don’t do that, set it to Dolby Prologic II.
Try on One file and let us know.
