Total system backup

I was wondering if someone could recommend a good backup program. I have a notebook with tons of information I can’t afford to lose. And I was thinking if someone stole it, I’d be totally screwed.
So what I’m looking for is a program that can backup the system, including all programs, WinXP, all settings and files, so that if it does get stolen, I can just install the program and the backup on a different computer (though harware setup may be a bit different). Also, backup updates every one or two weeks would also be great.
I’m willing to buy an external HDD for this.
