Help with saving to DVD

Can somebody hlp please.
Whatever I download, I am unable to play it on my DVD player.
I use Convert X to DVD, then burn the disc. I have DVD-RW discs and player.
I am not technical, so somebody give me some straightforward advice please.

Try to use WinAVi video Converter
