dual booting mint and windows 8

Now I don’t have one of those new computers that came with windows 8.
Its a custom built one.
Anyways my question is which order should i install them in?
and any tips?
(its just the i tried to install windows 8 and ubuntu a month ago and that caused heaps of problems. it was soo much easier with windows 7)
Dual booting such a hassle, with virtualization where it is today, why not just use a VM?
