Playing movies on a laptop

January 23rd, 2020

Hey, I bought my brother an external hard drive for Christmas and now I’m putting all my movies onto it. I was just wondering what application(s) I should include for him to install on his laptop in order to watch the movies. I haven’t installed anything new in years so I don’t really remember what to install. He has Windows Media Player, and I’m going to give him VLC Media Player. Anything else I need to include, like codecs or something?

VLC comes with its own built-in codecs so no , I think kmplayer is the better choice however , How are you puting the movies exactly?
If you keep em as is and make an ISO image then using a dvd software like powerdvd would be a good idea

I’ve found that VLC Player will do just fine for most files but it did however refuse to play a couple of .mkv files i had. I sorted that out by installing the ‘Combined Community Codec Pack’ although i had to use the version of Media Player Classic that came along with the pack to play those files.
Answer #3
Yup VLC rockz……
Else give GOM player etc.
But i recommend VLC media player dude…
Answer #4
PowerDVD with GPU accelerated post processing FTW

dude…! come on!! VLC works fine, but sometimes stutters with HQ stuff, go for combined community codec pack (cccp)
Answer #6
Looks like crap no GPU acceleration , PowerDVD with GPU accelerated post processing FTW even more so on a lappy
Answer #7
K-Lite codec pack with MP Classic.
Answer #8
I have always used VLC media player, except for .rm files (realmedia). The movies are kinda laggy then. If you have .rm files, then use realmedia player.

I’d recommend K-Lite Mega Codec pack + QuickTme Alternative Lite any day (I’ve been using it for 4+ years now). That combination can play any file you throw at it. The included media player, Media Player Classic-Home Cinema, is an excellent and a free multimedia player, and has GPU acceleration and post processing built-in. Plus, with its tiny size (around 4MB) you can be sure that it is no bloatware.
Try it out at the following links,
K-Lite Mega Codec pack:

QT Lite:

Hope this helps. Cheers!

Amen m8 this is what I use also. Never any hassle like other codecs.. But I also add the best MKV codec on the planet: CoreAVC

Thanks guys for all the responses. Basically the way I watch movies (and so he’ll follow suit) is by having the movie file on his hard drive and playing it from the laptop- no dvds required, otherwise he’d lose them and scratch the hell out of them. I like VLC, so I may give him that, but does something like CCCP come with it’s own player, or is it just a pack of codecs?

its basically a pack of codec with medi player classic. thats seriously the best out there
it plays well normally, but it sometimes fails with rm files. so go for this and real player if you want
