Whats the Average Lifespan of a Hard Disk?
My hard disk (samsung spinpoint sp2504c) has been running since 2006, will it fail soon?
im planning to buy a new hard disk

Answer #1
It’s hard to tell…You can buy 2 HDs..Same model…One of them might fail within weeks and one of them can go for years to come..
But It’s a good idea to always keep a backup image just in case..

Google's 2007 study found, based on a large field sample of drives, that actual annualised failure rates (AFRs) for individual drives ranged from 1.7% for first year drives to over 8.6% for three-year old drives.[14] A similar 2007 study at CMU on enterprise drives showed that measured MTBF was 3-4 times lower than the manufacturer's specification, with an estimated 3% mean AFR over 15 years based on replacement logs for a large sample of drives, and that hard drive failures were highly correlated in time.[15]

2006 Sounds like a long time. it could last longer. If you start hearing alot of clicking noises and large sounds emanating around the HDD that means its on its last legs (minutes hours or if lucky a few days). If you do what said, and create an image of the DISK, who cares if it Dies you can just flash the Image to a new HDD.

Use a disc imaging software like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost
Answer #6
You can use Windows Easy Transfer if you’re working with Win7, or you can just archive it into an ISO image and copy it to a cloud service or directly to a new HDD.
Answer #7
There are lots of factors that play into this, especially the usage of the drive.
The 3 GB Fujitsu system drive in my file server has been running near continuously since 2004, but the drive is much older than that.
I have backup standing by, but I’m curious just how long it will go.
Answer #8
buying hdd is like winning a lottery..
some come DOA
some come last for a week/month
some come last for a year
some come last longer than a year even for 5years(LOL)
actually is more on the user’s side on how he/she use his/her rig
not turning the pc properly or voltage fluctuations also affects the life of hdds
so better back up files once a year or quarterly.. still depends on the user
Answer #9
Manufacturers usually state 50,000 hours or 5 years (continuous usage), which is probably about the mean average taking into account the actual times that they last. Better to back up files continuously or weekly at least.
