For personal use, you would get virtual machines to run applications that need an older version of OS and you dont want to dual boot. Or for testing cracks/keygens. Companies use virtual machines for their servers.
VirtualBox (freeware) and Vmware Workstation(retail you have to buy it or crack it). Those are the popular virtualization softwares, install any version of Windows, Linux in them
