W7 Format error

January 27th, 2020

When im trying to format one partition on my w7 … (right click format) it gives me an error saying Windows was unable to complete the format
A litlle more explanation … I installed today my ssd (apacer a7turbo) and installed w7 x 64 ultimate on it . I already had w7 x64 ultimate on my other hdd which is splitted in three partitions ( C that contains windows , D/E for data storage) so now i got w7 x64 ultimate 2 twice on my pc … I want to format C ( old hdd windows partition ) and keep the windows only in the ssd …. :mrredhat:

Thats impossible. By what I can see you are formatting your C Drive? But your using your C Drive so that doesnt make sense.!
Answer #2
No dude i booted from the os that is installed at the new disk (ssd)
Answer #3
If you are not running the OS which you want to format (impossible) then you can try using another software like Partition Magic (some people hate it) or Acronis Disk Director.
Answer #4
Not sure I follow…Where did you install the new windows…In the primary partition?

The new windows are installed at the new Disk (ssd) which is not splitted into partitions . The old windows are installed at the C partition of my old hdd If you are not running the OS which you want to format (impossible) then you can try using another software like Partition Magic (some people hate it) or Acronis Disk Director.
Well as i said . Im running the os which is installed at the new disk (ssd) and im trying to fromat the particion in old hdd which has windows installed on it …
Here this will be helpful
Answer #6
The one you want to format looks look the boot drive…Not sure you can do that within widows…And if you format it by other means…Your windows will no longer boot…Maybe if you move the new windows to to be the first drive and do a boot repair with your windows 7 DVD…
Maybe I’m not seeing the full picture…But that’s the way I see it…

I understand now. You cannot format the boot partition of Windows. Insert Windows 7 Install CD. Use that to format it. Then it will be blank. Then just exit installation.

Image Now … The boot comes from H (new drive) but still … C cant be formated …

C is always a system drive. The drive which contains your system. Maybe, even if you change the drive, it is hard-coded into Windows that C cannot be formatted. Use Windows 7 CD, or gParted or another partition tool. But I must warn you, you won’t probably be able to boot then, NTLDR goes always for hda1/sda1, that means for the first partition in list, which is always C\
Answer #10
Partition Magic
use any but this, as it’s old and error prone
and it won’t run on 7 anyway
put
diskmgmt.msc
into the search box and give us a screen shot of that
and it looks like your still booting fron the HDD not the SSD
disconnect the HDD and see if the SSD will still boot
if not your boot loader is on the HDD and deleting the partition will delete the boot loader
so re-install with the HDD disconnected
then try reconnecting and formatting the HDD
Answer #11
I can boot from the ssd as you can see here ( im 100% sure about this really fast startup and shut down )

And the diskmgmt.msc pic here …

pretty sure the bootloader is on C: then
if it was on H I think it would make H C
can you boot with just the SSD connected ?
think you best bet is to disconnect the HDD and re-install to SSD then reconnect HDD and you should be able to work with the 1st partition on it
Answer #14
Ok take out the old Hard drive and the new one and switch the new one with the old so that the cable to the old HDD is going to the SSD and then reinstall Windows onto the SSD so it shows up as C (With the old Hard not pluged in)
then unplug the SSD and plug the HDD in and format by booting into Windows 7 CD
