VPN advice?

August 6th, 2016

Hi,
So been reading a lot lately about these new laws that are coming in and how the government is controlling the internet, but just wanting to know
and may be others will want to know too, but is a VPN really worth it I read that some VPN’s provide full anonymity when you are online and that the only thing your ISP
see’s is how much data you’re transferring.
If it’s worth it could you guys recommend a great VPN service (I was looking at BTGuard) and how many of you actually use a VPN
Thanks.

You have to first ask your self what you are doing on the internet, and if you even need a VPN. The problem with a VPN, is it will kill your latency, and slow down your internet. You really need to be doing something illegal before “needing” a vpn. And downloading and pirated movies as an end user is not necessarily considered illegal in that your not going to have any legal actions taken against you. Chances are your ISP might be involved in a program, or have one of its own, that watches things like bittorrent and scans for IP’s, and if they find your IP in an monitored swarm, they will cut you off. Some have like a 3 strikes rule. But as long as you know what your doing, even that is not an issue.
The moment I found out my ISP monitored bittorrent and cut off your internet if they find you in there, i looked everyhwere I could to find a bugged torrent (one my ISP was watching IP in) and downloaded the movie. Sure enough first thing the next morning, my internet was cut off. But thats was because I did it on purpose, and 3 years ago. Ive never once been caught since then, because I download smart (and exclusively use torrents).
If you dont fully understand the internet, and dont mind a hit on latency and speed, or spending a little extra every month, then a VPN can provide good anonymity and peace of mind. Depending on what you need the VPN for, will determine if you need one with specific features or not. I personally don’t have any recommendations as I just setup a VPN on my own server when I need it.
It is also very dependent on where you are living, as the laws for piracy in different countries vary by a lot.
Oh yea, and this too. There are a few countries out there with weird laws =(

I use bolehvpn and get free access to an Ipt account, they don’t keep logs and they’re fast servers. But as said, depends what country you’re in and how much you want to pay.

I’ve used many VPN providers over the years, if you want cheap, reliable, and fast, then…

I’ll go with here, I’ve used a few (only switching as Seed.ST($5 a month) have dropped their Dutch server (where my seedboxes are, which was a great SFTP link up)), currently offering $6 a month or $39.95 a year(no brainer).

Well atm I am using IPT and using it mainly for TV shows, everything else is here at WBB, the rest of my internet use is general social sites, youtube etc. I live in the UK and lately a lot of sites are getting blocked by the main ISP’s (I am with Virgin Media). as you say a VPN would give me peace of mind from people trying to look in and see what I am doing but after you’ve stated that the end user isn’t really a problem it’s making me think do i really need one.
VM does have a 3 strikes rule (I think) and i have never had any emails, letters or cut offs so.
