Travelling with your laptop

August 5th, 2016

Ok folks have looked this up on the net but found jack all info.
What is the lagalities of travelling with your laptop and maybe an external hdd which contains data such as movies and music in which you technically don’t own. Even if you were to have received them off a mate and not directly downloaded them yourself.
Heading to France very soon and am concerned as I want to take my movies and especially my music on my laptop or external 1TB drive. Will customs try and do my over or is this a common thing?
Anyone do this on a regular basis or heard of situations like this ??

Moved from Serious discussions to Helpdesk.

I travel a lot from Australia to USA, Vietnam. Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, UK, Philippines and have never been asked to show contents of my laptop. I have ex HDD’s plus usb drives and they never look at them. If they suspect you of child porn they will go through them but I’m sure that movies and music are the least of their worries. I recently went to Hawaii and although they searched my case, they never gave my laptop a second glance. I went into france about nine years ago and they just waved me through. I have never seen anyone have their laptop checked.
BTW, 90% of travelers have laptops so it would take hours to check a plane load.
Answer #3
No worries they do not have the time for any extensive search %99.99 of the time. But you should be concerned if you are planning to export fake french textile brands
like Lacoste hehe. They passed a new regulation with heavy consequences.
Answer #4
They are only checking if the laptop is not really a concealed bomb. They are not looking for .
