Sony vgn-sz680 Windows XP – Can’t adjust brightness

April 8th, 2021

Bit of a strange one that has got me lost and confused! Any advice or suggestions welcome.
I’ve got a Sony vgn-sz680 and cannot adjust the brightness levels. It’s stuck on the highest setting so it’s not sooo bad. However, it’s too bright at night and also kills the battery quite quickly.
The weird thing is, I installed Windows 7 on it and could adjust the brightness just fine. However, Windows 7 doesn’t recognise the webcam so it’s not an ideal workaround.
I’ve downloaded and installed all the drivers from the Sony website but still can’t lower the brightness either through the software settings or via the hotkeys. When I press FN+F5 or F6, it shows full brightness but can’t lower it.
Thanks again

you installed the “Sony Video Shared Library” as well as the display driver ?
what video card you may be alble to get updated drivers from the card mfg (nVidia or intel)
do you have the brightness set lower in the BIOS for battery use ?
Answer #2
Hey thanks. Laptop is currently at home but it’s an nVidia card and I tried the latest drivers from their website. I have also checked the bios but couldn’t see any options where I could adjust the brightness. I’ll take another look when I get home. Thanks for the suggestions.

Hey thanks again. The settings change visually on the application but the brightness doesn’t change. Still set to full.
