[SOLVED] — DATA TRANSFER ERROR

July 29th, 2022

Well, I’m transferring a different amount of files (74.6GB) to another one of my SATA II drives (both are SATA II’s and Western Digital). The transfer speed is varying from 37MBPS – 42.3MBPS. I thought the speed should be about 3GB/s — Am I wrong?
Answer #1
Yep ..Ya Wrong.. 3GB/s Unlees U have a Super Computer…Lol
Answer #2
Sorry, don’t know where I saw that before. But shouldn’t it be much faster than 42.3MBPS? These are 7,200RPM or 10,000.
Answer #3
Its not gonna unless u have RAID configured
Answer #4
Your talking about Revoulutons… there… Not how much gigs..
Answer #5
Your talking about Revoulutons... there... Not how much gigs..
What are you talking about? Also, I would have to run it in RAID mode in order to get 300MBPS speed?!

7,200 RPM means 7,200 Revolutions Per Minute. (I think thats what he’s referring to)
Answer #7
Revolving would equal to speed rate per second. Correct or no?
Answer #8
Its how many times the disk turns per second if i can remember correctly.
Answer #9
Revolving would equal access time not trans rate
trans rate would be dictated by (slowist to fastest)ATA66, ATA100, SATA & SATAII interface
try this
HDTach

there might be a database somewhere you can compare it to
not sure if it works in Vista tho & maybe full version in appz section
do you have a 700mb movie, how long to copy that ?
do that all the time so I have a base to start from
slow trans better than no trans but full trans would be niz
Answer #10
Not being funny m8 but do you get up every morning looking for some problem with your PC?? lol
Get up switch it on and enjoy yaself instead of finding all the faults on your PC….it will be faulty in some areas due to the new OS u’ve just installed not all but some problems will be fixed…but just use it for day 2 day duties and enjoy it.
Answer #11
by the way that transfer rate is ok for that drive….it could be faster if you RAID0 the drive with another 1 or purchased a seperate RAID controller card…but its upto you if you want to RAID your drives.
Answer #12
THX…. … I`m..not Really good with Wordz… Thats What happens when Ya Smoke too much….. Image

Yeah, it would be better..because I’ve been to the no transfer before . I don’t think your software works on Vista 64-bit..only 32-bit? It takes about 2.5 minutes for a movie (700MB).
Answer #15
I think you are getting your bits and Bytes mixed up and also the difference between theoretical bandwidth and
actual read/write speeds confused.
I thought the speed should be about 3GB/s -- Am I wrong?
Yes — for starters the speed of SATA II is 3 Gb(bits)/s and not 3GB(Bytes)/s.
This gives a bandwidth of 300 Mbytes/sec — but this is not read/write speed!!

SATA 3Gb/s  3000MHz embedded clock
x         1 bit per clock
x          80% for 8b10b encoding
/          8 bits per byte                          =         300 Mbytes/sec
http://www.sata-io.org/3g.asp

transfer speed is varying from 37MBPS - 42.3MBPS.
Those speeds are NORMAL (maybe a little slow) but I don’t know what you are using to measure.
Below is a benchmark on a pair of WD drives very similer to what you describe yours to be.
Srcoll down to the “2. HD Tach” section — you will see these drives are averaging between 45.3 MB/s and 47.0 MB/s WRITE speeds. And this slight difference can be caused by a number of things.

BOTTOM LINE — your doing fine.
Answer #16
It takes about 2.5 minutes for a movie (700MB)
well I get 45 sec from ATA100 to SATA drive
my asus mobo is SATA based with a Jmicron raid set-up for IDE/ATA drives so that may make my IDE/ATA drives a little quicker
SATA based system w/ add on Ultra ATA(IDE) – quicker (my setup)
under your IDE controlers in device manager are the “Serial ATA” drive controlers listed and duz the primary and 2ndary channels show using a DMA mode ?
Ultra ATA(IDE) based system w/ add on SATA – slower
or are your “Ultra ATA” drive controlers listed and duz the primary and 2ndary channels show using a DMA mode ?

Oh O.K., I think I just got the numbers mixed up. At least all works, thanks to (sorry if I typed your name wrong). Thanks all, again!! [Solved]
