hello, i’m lookin to buy a quad core processor for my computer is socket am2 and am2+ the same?
Answer #1
what socket do you have. they are compatible with each but Am2+ processor would have reduced Hypertransport on AM socket
please do state what motherboard you have?
Answer #2
Logically speaking AM2+ CPUs should fit on AM2 boards (and vice versa).
However, a BIOS update will likely be necessary for any AM2 board that doesn’t natively support AM2+, and if the manufacturer doesn’t provide a BIOS update with AM2+ support, you’re SOL.

Well from the looks of it, I can come to this conclusion:
1. The motherboard is a AM2+ socket which in theory works with Phenom II’s or Athlon II’s.
2. This is a OEM motherboard only, so no bios updates, so limited CPU support, being Phenom 9950 the highest it supports.
3. The type of motherboard is Micro-ATX.
So, I reckon if you want a quad core. Swap the motherboard, as its your best option.
I recommend a ASUS M4A785D-M Pro, its DDR2 though, so you can save some cash on RAM.
CPU will be a Athlon II X4 620, its benchmarks are pretty decent and its great value for money. So 2 purchases:
The motherboard will be $150
The CPU will be $160
