Is it possible to Reformat PC without Windows XP CD?
Answer #1
Yeah Hiren’s boot cd or a modified usb boot thing.
Answer #2
what is that? care to explain how it works? would appreciate it
Answer #3
Hiren’s boot cd is a multipurpose hardware testing and related disk.
In its harddrive tools bit, you can format a hard drive. Athlough I forgot which program in that does that, but I’m absolutely sure that it has at least 1 program that can do that. All you need is to download that app and burn it to a cd via a burner. Boot it with boot set on optical drive.
Or if you want a dirty and easier way, use dban.
Answer #4
It is safe though? and does it work like a normal Windows XP CD?
Answer #5
Hate to state the obvious, but without the XP CD your computer won’t be much good after you’ve formatted it

Yes as long as you read the instructions properly.
For dban, check its site for info.
Answer #7
Well I got a Windows XP Pro Edition burned by my friend but my PC is a Home Edition…will it work?
Answer #8
It doesn’t matter, as long as you can boot the disk when you change bios settings to first priority to optical drive or remove hard drive from booting.
Answer #9
I dont get what you just said there but a PRO XP CD should work on a HOME Edition PC yeah?
This is my first time thinking of reformatting so don’t go so technical with me
Answer #10
im pretty sure that if you boot from xp disk on any operating system, then select the format option, it will format the hard drive
Answer #11
What I’m trying to say is.
If you boot the Windows install disk before the system starts.
Do this by holding DEL key during power on. Change boot settings or similar (Its named differently in each bios). So set the boot to boot from your CD or DVD drive (again it might be jibberish).
Save and exit. Now your windows install disk should be in the optical drive, if not, insert it and reset the system. If you get into the install menu, wait for it. Choose new install and delete the partition.
Make a new partition and choose the size. The rest should be straight forward.
Answer #12
Partition means the size divided for the C Drive and D Drive yeah?
And if I am not mistake I guess the XP Pro Edition works on my HOME Edition PC yeah?

Correct, this is how it is.
Answer #14
Will i need to enter any CD-keys or whatever when I reformat my PC?
Because I am going to use a “FAKE” XP PRO CD on a Home Edition PC
Answer #15
Some Windows OS has the key input disabled. So its a mixed bag. If it didn’t you have to find a key.
Answer #16
cant use PRO key on HOME edition—
But u could consider getting windows 7 ultimate from here and install it with Daemon Tools. (I have no idea if thats possible with xp.)

Hm, not a good idea and the xp bit won’t work as there is a second stage in installing part that requires a disk and you won’t be in Windows.

His hardware setup is unknown, so you can’t decide what he can use.
Answer #20
well but he could try since the worst that could happen is it fails and he gets kicked back into xp. So cant see the big no no there.
Answer #21
Mistakenly posted in the wrong topic.
My bad!
Answer #22
I got my Dell Dimension 9150 in 2005 so I don’t think it would be great with Windows 7?
What would happen if I tried to reformat my PC with a fake XP Pro CD on my Home Edition PC? and if it goes wrong will it muck up my PC?
Answer #23
No worries douglas. Your PC is not Home Edition, its Operating System (OS) is Home Edition.
So you can install whatever OS you want. Nothing would muck your PC physically and if something
goes wrong on software side you can always ask for a solution here.
