Re-Encode MKV to AVI (with subtitles)

August 14th, 2013

Hey guys! I’m basically looking for a simple piece of software that will re-encode MKV files to AVI while keeping subtitles, reason being that I can put videos on my external HD and plug it into my tv but only AVI is supported.

1) Use MKVExtractGUI to extract the subtitles stream from the MKV. No need to do that if you already have a seperate subtitles file obviously.
2) In Avidemux. Load the MKV.
3) A window will popup stating H.264 detected. Click no.
4) A window will popup stating Index is not up to date. Click Yes.
5) In the Video dropdown menu, select MPEG-4-ASP (XviD)
6) Click the Filters button, select Subtitles, click on Subtitler, select the subtitles file you extracted before, in the encoding drop down menu, select UTF-8.
7) In the Audio dropdown menu, select Copy
8) In the Format dropdown menu, select AVI.
9) Click Save Video, name.avi
Encoding will start. When finished, you will have an AVI file with subtitles included.
Note:
If you wanted to just remux the MKV to AVI without subtitles, it would be so simple. Just select “Copy” on both Video and Audio and save the video as AVI. But Avidemux won’t let you add subtitles if you just copy the video and audio unfortunately.

You’re welcome. Another better way to do it is to use the old version of Handbrake 0.9.3 (newer versions do not support AVI). It’s a little more complicated to use with all its settings but you’ll get superior results.

.
But that would retain the H264 codec which may not play, as the AVI player (TV) may only handle DivX/Xvid format…..Anyhow, Something to try as it is fast!
