Question about playing an online game with tethering.

June 7th, 2014

If I were to buy a smartphone that supports tethering and make my computer connect to it wirelessly will it lag in multiplayer?

I use to play WoW when I tethered off my phone. You can PVE (because you don’t need a fast response time), but its impossible to PVP. I mean, you can do it, but you will get rofl stomped by the latency. Will range from 100-300 ms.
So no FPS or PVP anything really, unless you don’t mind failing, lol.
EDIT: that was with 3G, never tried with 4G.

omg 100-300… Having 30-40ms to me is horrible. I play League of Legends and having those ms times kill me, but wow 100-300… lol

It will vary depending on your service, location, and air traffic at the time. You might be able to get under 100, but won’t be able to get below 50.
If you are a serious gamer tho, this is not really an option for you.
I raided with a couple of the top guilds before in wow, one of them required everyone to have a cable or fiber connection and a UPS. Some people take their games serious, lol.
EDIT: You might be able to tether with your current phone, have you looked into it? Just to test it out. I am currently using an old BlackBerry Curve, and do not pay for tethering service, but can still hook it up to my computer and get internet access. I am on it right now =D
