Personal information revealed

August 8th, 2016

Hi there,
So I was playing a game of League of Legends, when this guy starting flaming us. Badly. So I decided to just troll him back.
When the game was over, he added me to friendlist, I accepted cus’ I figured I could troll him a little more. Here comes the messed up part, he just started spewing out all of my personal information. Needless to say I reported him. But I’m curious, how did he manage to get all of my personal information? I frequently scan my PC for various malware/vira. I’m guessing this is not the work of some malicious software, as I’ve had no previous contact with this person. So no way for him to of installed anything.
Is there a security flaw in my system, or how could he possible of gotten this?
Also, not sure of this goes under off-topic or Helpdesk, either way, help is appreciated.

He found your facebook page?
Answer #2
Quite possible, how did he manage to find that to begin with though? It’s not like my username is my real name. Also, I have little to no personal information on my facebook page. Atleast not the sorta information he was throwing out. Adress, real full name (my facebook doesn’t have my full name on it) etc.
What I’m thinking is, he managed to find my email adress that I use for the game, which is also connected with my real email adress. The one I use for work and so on.

Doesn’t LoL collect all the information that you mentioned? your address, phone number, etc..?

FYI, While some Antiviruses/Antispywares are better than others, None of em provides 100% protection (And never will!)
There are numerous ways around em. Just because it says your PC is clean, It doesn’t necessarily mean it really is! (That’s just a common misconception) and when it comes to firewalls, Some of em do provide 100% protection (Or close to it) but at the end of the day, They’re not fully automated and rely on you to make the right decisions from time to time (So if you’re not being careful enough and just instantly approve a new app that you don’t recognize without giving it any real thought or research, You’re screwed!) So to sum it up, It’s highly possible your PC was (Or in fact still is) infected with spyware!
If you wanna be on the safe side, You should backup any important data onto an external hard drive and do a clean OS reinstall (Clean means formatting the OS partition in the process) this is the only way to be truly safe.
I wouldn’t bother with trying to find any possible infection, As they’re not always easy to find, Nor remove.
Also, I strongly recommend you use a Linux Live CD (Or another computer, If you have one) to change all of your passwords, As well as secret questions/answers. This is a must as it’s possible some of your accounts have been compromised! Also, You should avoid using the same password for multiple accounts as it’s a very bad practice and a security nightmare (You should use a different password for each of em, And make sure they’re somewhat complex and not easy to guess)
Edit: I’d also like to point out that you should never use someone else’s computer to log-in to any of your accounts (Not sure if you’ve ever done it, But just saying) While you can assert some level of control over your own PC security, You have none when it come’s to someone else’s (Which may be infected with spyware)
I'm guessing this is not the work of some malicious software, as I've had no previous contact with this person. So no way for him to of installed anything.
You’re not thinking clearly on this!
There’s truly no need for you to know this person in order for him to infect your PC with spyware (It could be totally random) like from a file you downloaded, Or a site you visited (That had malicious code in it) and it’s possible that he signed up for LoL just to taunt you, Or that he already had an account and it’s simply a strange coincidence (I’m not a gamer myself, But I do hear people talk about LoL quite often, So it’s popularity cannot be denied!)
Doesn't LoL collect all the information that you mentioned? your address, phone number, etc..?
Actually, They don’t! (Just checked it on their site)
They only collect the D.O.B/Region/E-Mail Address when you sign up. But just for the record, This kind of information generally wouldn’t be available to the public (Only to admins/technical staff)
But if you meant in the event his account would’ve been compromised, I kinda see your point.

Server side admin with access to details makes sense / and your getting to paranoid sit back and think hard come away from your computer and go into your Kitchen and make a cup of coffee or tea and deep think while away from the comp Because while sat at the comp your head can become cloudy like the cloud servers . Tally up all that you did and he did etc. etc. Seriously he must have access to your details from within Server side if your fully secure then that’s got to be the answer ?
And if Server side access what details have you given Me i don’t play so not sure what you give up to play that he has revealed has he only revealed what you gave up to play on that particular server or more meaning what you have not given server side to play like who is your sisters name! is he or are they some one you know ie. Friend or friends in real life think about it like i said earlier! If only server side info and nothing else then Great tells a story to you then don’t it Think wisely m8

Maybe a friend is playing a prank on you. Anyone you know in real life who knows your ID could be messing with you
Answer #7
Server side admin with access to details makes sense
No, It does not!
This has already been ruled out as they didn’t had the particular info^.
But generally speaking, No reasonable admin would ever think of doing such a thing.

Possible, But not very likely IMO.
I mean, He’d have to be a really lousy friend to do something like that!
Either way, I still think that doing a clean OS reinstall would be a good idea.

Thank you for posting this lesson to be learned. From a complete novice perspective I will clamp down on this info, more than I had to this point. I know some sites attract a nefarious type and they are more than capable and willing to compromise your info, a game to them. there are sites devoted to users posting how they have infiltrated minor servers and perpetrated whatever minor inconvenience they could. I ran a home server and got an email from a guy that told me about that site.
Don’t gmail and the like auto provide sign in info to sites to allow you to post? possible trace back from there to get your info. don’t know but appreciate the heads up. no friend is gonna play like that, none that want to remain that way.

I reckon it is someone you know. I guess that will teach you for retaliating with a troll.
