Pc’s Downloading At Different Rates

August 7th, 2016

I have a laptop & desktop both located in the same room. Both have in-built wireless cards. When downloading the laptop can max out my connection, the desktop can only reach a tenth of the speed.
The desktop was a very old P2 model. I have bought a new desktop which is vastly more powerful. I’m using a Belkin wireless adapter to connect to the net. My download stats are the same on the new desktop.
My new desktop is also a massive upgrade to my laptop, at a loss to workout why the desktop speeds are so poor.

Answer #1
Sounds like the problem lies with the Belkin wireless adapter that your using. Without knowing the model number, your probably using a old model. Maybe an upgrade is needed.
Then again, I used to use a Belkin wireless adapter it was a USB connector… It was AWFUL !!! Buy a better product, or go for homeplugs.
Answer #2
The old desktop i had used an in-built Asus wireless card & this had the same problem. The old desktop connection would also drop out a couple of times a day & it would take a few mins to find my router & re-connect. Have had my new desktop for a couple of days & experienced no drop outs. The dl speed still poor though.
Answer #3
Sounds like a WIFI issue, cable it mate no chance of any issues then CAT5e cables are cheap.
Answer #4
Would obviously prefer a wired connection, sadly the nearest socket i have, which my router is connected to, is 20 meters away.
I have also noted that the wireless card in my laptop & the Belkin adapter in my desktop are both 802.11b/g. If both these are the same spec why is 1 10x faster than the other.
Answer #5
I use a 30m CAT5 fitted all nice around the carpet edge and door frames.
Answer #6
so , ltop ok ,but pc not good …
if yr pc wifi has always dropped out , and yr new one does also , then u a chance to have an interference problem with the position of yr pc …
have you tried cabling your desktop to compare performance , or change it’s location ?
Answer #7
The new desktop connection is stable. It was the old desktop connection which had regular drop outs. Both machines have bad DL speeds.
Have run regular speed tests on laptop & desktop. Laptop averages 10M DL & 1M UL, desktop averages 0.8M DL 1M UL
It seems strange that the desktop uploads faster than it downloads.
When i login to my router it shows the laptop connected at 54mbps whereas the desktop is at 2 mbps.
My isp seem to think something is blocking the desktops speed. Both the laptop & desktop show same signal strength.
