Nintendo Wii Firmware

I have just borrowed a wii to play silent hill shattered dreams and i cant get it to load. I figured it was down to the ISO no being patched so im currently downloading another that is pre-patched however…
The wii is running firmware 3.2E custom, what i would like to know is if since the wii is already modded is there an easy way i can update the CFW to the latest edition without the need for a memory card or if silent hill will already work on 3.2E which i doubt because it is brand new.

the latest 4.2 firmware can be hacked easily with bannerbomb but you need a SDcard for that and I dont think you can update the firmware without a memory or sd card.
