New phone? what to get?

August 16th, 2013

hey guys,
so i have been using the lg p500 for about a year now.
And now i have decided to get a new phone.
firstly i would like an android. so don’t say iphone or windows 7 phone.
secondly i know i should ask on xda. but the more opinions the better
i mainly use the the phone for fm radio, internet, music, texting, and some light-medium gaming.
by light-medium i mean things like, angry birds, cut the rope etc.
i was thinking about a phone that has a 1 GHz cpu.
also dev support should be good for that phone. i don’t want a phone that most people don’t make roms for.
my budget is not high enough for galaxy s2.
but anything below that should be fine.
does anyone have any suggestions?

I was about to say galaxy nexus, but then i noticed that you can’t get a sgs2.
So if you are going for a budget android, I would recommend the Orange Montecarlo aka ZTE skate, my brother has one, nice big screen and isn’t laggy, he uses it for txts, light gaming, and facebook.
he is using it with a custom rom (mainly used to get rid of orange bloatware)
I am from the UK, and it was £130 including top-up. not sure what the prices are like elsewhere.

ok it seems like optimus 2x is about 500 dollars where i live. and galaxy s2 is 700.
from all the reviews i read online these two phones are almost the same. so i was wondering, is galaxy s2 really worth the extra 200 dollars?
because if it is, i might wait a little while and buy that.
Answer #6
yes it is i have it and i love it

Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray.
If you want a good phone thats semi-high end, one of the best screens, batteries and cameras that are on the market for a good price.
And no, I dont have it myself, but I work at an Norwegian electronic-store, and I’m often located at the mobilephone-section, so I got decent knowledge.
About the S2. Its becoming annoying that everyone wants the S2 when its not THAT good compared to other phones (ie SE Arc S, HTC Sensation XE or HTC Titan).
In Norway everyone wants one because it won the last phone-test.
Compared to (an example) the Arc S, the Arc S got a better screen and a better camera AND the Arc S are cheaper.
BUT if you want to watch 720p (or greater) videos\movies, you’ll need a dualcore processor.
I have yet seen\heard anyone that actually want to do that on a phone tho.
Youtube HQ arent a problem on any highend phone.
But yes, as I said; The SE Xperia Ray are one of the best phones out there in the middle-cost range.
Edit: Forgot to mention that the screen is a tad smaller than the high-end phones.

I’d recommend Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo or you could wait until CES ’12 and MWC ’12 are over to see what new phones they bring.
Answer #9
Lol I have the exact phone as you,
I’m going for the Galaxy S2.
Although for you i can recommend the Galaxy S.
It’s a Decent phone imo.
Answer #10
the thing is, galaxy s has the same price as optimus 2x. hence i was wondering. if i should pay 200 dollars more for galaxy s II or should i get optimus 2x.
Answer #11
S2 over 2X
Answer #12
LG have good hardware, but their software aint that good.
rather than xperia ray, neo or arc are better ( i have a neo v)
ray is just 9mm thin but has 3.3″ screen whereas neo has 3.7″

Imo save up and go for the SGS2.
the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray also looks nice,
i would not get the Black.
I’ve used it not that great…

I made the mistake of buying the cheaper phone 2 years ago (htc magic) and there’s a reason phones are cheaper. Will you be able to do the same things as with the high end phone? Yes, but at the cost of time etc. And as soon as you stop getting official updates you’re screwed (even Cyanogenmods cant support forever).
Have the S2 and I don’t regret it. The build quality, stability and features are top notch and Samsung.
As I havent used the Optimus I can’t really say anything about it, only that when doing my research (before buying the s2) it did not stand out as ‘futureproof’.
For quality and price the S2 is unbeatable. Although if you wait roughly one year you could get a quad core phone.
