Party of the people
Present-day left wing
Tried to push for the interests of the commons
Gaius Marius Born in Arpinum (just like Cicero)
Elected to consul in 107 BCE, during war in Numidia, where he ran several successful military campaigns
Reforms in army, one of which opened positions for poor citizens as a career
Held consulship for 5 consecutive years from 104-100 BCE
During this time he worked closely with tribunes to promote popular laws and intimidation to pass legislation
Influence died as Sulla rose to power
Power held by Assembly of the Tribunes
Democrats
Gaius Marius = Barack Obama
Optimates
Party of the aristocrats
Power held by Senate
Right wing
Promoted conservative (traditional) policies that supported the interests of the wealthy and the old noble families
Lucius Cornelius Sulla
Elected to consul in 88 BCE
Senate gave him power of the army to fight off Asian ruler Mithridates
Marius fled from war against Mithridates, while Sulla stayed and fought
Marius stayed in Rome and used riots and violence to suppress his enemies
After Sulla finished his asian conquest, he used the 6 legions that were given to him to suppress the violence that Marius incited
He used proscriptions to get rid of his enemies
published lists of public enemies who were to be summarily executed and whose property was confiscated by the state
Instituted many reforms designed to give more power to the Senate and to reduce the role of tribunes, popular assemblies, and equestrians
**Sulla was the first to actually lead an army into the city of Rome in order to further his political ambitions**

Campaigning
Funding
Personal wealth
Expensive to campaign
Showmanship was very essential
A candidate for office wore an artificially whitened toga and so was candidatus (made shining white).
The social institution of patronage (clientela) was essential in politics, and one of the key duties of clients was to accompany their patron on official business and all kinds of campaigning, and of course to vote with him on all issues. Powerful families supported each other through informal alliances (amicitia) often cemented through arranged marriages Bribery was very common indirect: provision of free grain, free entertainment (baths, shows, chariot races and gladiatorial games), even huge outdoor banquets direct: actually paying off officials or giving the commoners money directly in return for votes Intimidation = campaign strategy Sometimes incited riots, or hired thugs or gladiators to rough people up
Used threat of their loyal soldiers to pressure the state Commoners only way to influence politics was through their sheer numbersby votes, and especially by riots. Voting:
Voted in two assemblies: Assembly of the Centuries and the Assembly of the Tribes

An attendant handed each voter a small wooden tablet covered with wax on which he inscribed his vote: V (for uti rogas, as you propose to support a bill), A (for antiquo, I vote against, to oppose a bill), or the candidate's name in an election
