Looking for a GFX card for a Pentium II 398MHZ, 512 RAM

October 16th, 2013

This is a spin off of my the last thread I made for for my cousins Pentium II. (lol!!!! again )
He is in search of a gfx card, I forgot the current make of his presently installed GFX card, but I do know it’s a old..old Nvidia GFX card.
Would anyone know where he can purchase a card for his system, he does not make any thing fancy, just a card that will allow him to view certain vids properly an maybe view steaming (Netflicks) movies online, because his current ard displays steaming movies, weather t be Netflicks or Youtube like a picture slide show.
I told him that he could buy a cheap card for maybe 20$ to 30$ surperior too the card that he has, I just need a web site or a specific model of card that he can use in his box?
I will report back with the model an make of his current GFX card.

What slots are available? AGP or PCI or possibly even ISA.
However I doubt it will make that much difference with such a slow CPU. Graphics card offloading won’t make that big a difference with such a slow CPU and AGP cards will only allow assistance for H.264 Mpeg4 AVC decoding but it’s whether it will be enough. Newer gfx cards can assist decoding of a wider range of video but these are unlikely to be available in AGP.
It will struggle to decode most compressed videos, especially H.264. XVid it might manage okay.

It’s amazing that people continue to use decade old technology when computers and computer components are so cheap.
It’s a wonder that computer even works.

I remember, many…many years ago when I had a PC with his specs I was able ot view many amounts of decoded vids without the problems that’s he is having.
I just need a website that maybe has old stock in older hardware parts, or maybe a site that specializes in such.
As far as his slots are concerned, I will have to find that out.

Could you please define what the word cheap means to you?

Until you know what type of video card (agp, pci, etc), exactly how much you want to spend, and your location (to know where to purchase from); there was no point in making this thread! At the moment, you are trolling sir =(
I feel this will be another 5 page thread for the same pentium 2 people told you to throw away at least 20 times.
PS: If you spend $50 bucks for a video card, your better off finding another $50 bucks and buying a whole computer. For $100 bucks you can buy a computer at least 4x as powerful as that one.

Why does he have to define it? You can go look for your self. He is not even the OP.
TommyDawkins replied: Your negativity in this thread is unwarranted. To say that the OP is a troll is no more than saying that you're a troll.
You apparently missed the last thread. Almost every aspect of this exact computer was covered in a 5 page thread. I explained him he needs to spend the money from the video card on a new (used) computer. Anything else is a waste. I am only trying to help sir.
PS: Advising anyone to spend money on a PC this old is bad advice IMO.

Your negativity in this thread is unwarranted. To say that the OP is a troll is no more than saying that you’re a troll. It appears that the OP isn’t a computer whiz who knows the Bus architecture on his motherboard. With that it is fair to say that his question was an honest one who didn’t know what he was getting himself into.
As for the second question: It wasn’t targeted towards the OP, it was targeted towards another post who The_collective was asking for his definition in cheap if he can make claims that a new PC is cheap.
Your negativity helps no one.
As to on topic – I believe the motherboard of OP’s pc would be using AGP.. best way to check is to pop that baby open and see what the lanes look like (post a pic if you can)

In my country components are all except being cheap – but maybe i am wrong:
1x – MBO socket 1155 ASRock Z68 PRO3 (Intel Z68), DDR3-2133, VGA, PCIe, SATA 3, USB3
1x – CPU Intel Core i7-2600K, 3.40 GHz/8MB, socket 1155
1x – HDD 3.5″ – 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200/32MB, SATA III
2x – RAM PC DDR3 4GB, PC1600 CL9, XMS3, Corsair
1x – Cooler Master, HAF 922, Midi tower ,black
1x – DVD RW SAMSUNG SH-S222AB DVD 22x SATA, black
1x – VGA PCIe2.0 ATI Radeon HD6970 XFX, 2GB DDR5, 2xDVI, HDMI, 2x miniDP
1x – ATX COOLER MASTER GX 650W Active PFC – EU
1x – Cooler Cooler Master for CPU, Hyper TX3
How much you will pay for this in your country – in my country is the same if you buy PC or if you buy individually each components.
EDIT: @SABERWOLF – sorry for going off topic.

I doubt that it will make any difference because it’s not the gfx card which is the problem as it’s not doing any decoding. It’s the CPU and codecs/media players that will make the difference IMO.
A windows re-install or using more efficient software to optimize the little CPU resources that are available seems his best option.
What type of videos is he attempting to play? Use MediaInfo text view to show the details.
