Laptop screen

July 23rd, 2013

No stick with me here as its a weird one..
I was re-imaging a laptop on Windows 7 and just running the updates, It has just finished SP1 and was up the the restart stage.
When it restarted and the computer started back up there was nothing on the screen not even the bios loading.
I plugged an external monitor in and that works fine, I am wondering why all of a sudden the screen wont come on now? I have stripped it down and no cables are lose it all looks in working order.
With is not showing the bios load up Im thinking its a dead screen and I would but a new one for £35 but I am just not convinced its the screen..
There is no back light on the screen, no flickering just the same state as if it was switched off.
Any ideas before I start throwing money at it?

Well one thing we know for certain is that your HD ain’t dead.
If you’ve checking for loose connections and it’s still not working then it pretty much seems like your screen has died – although it does seem a bit coincidental that it should come after a SP upgrade.
If you can’t even see the BIOS loading then it doesn’t look like very good news.
Answer #2
My advice, Obtain the laptop’s service manual and make sure the connections to the monitor are all good.
Also, Do a BIOS reset.
Answer #3
I agree with the co-incidence, however, if not the connections or a duff lead, it may be the inverter, not the LCD itself.
Answer #4
Very interesting.
Is it definitely loading up? Can you hear it? (this should rule out most mobo problems).
Shine a torch on it and see if it’s just the backlight that’s gone. If that’s the case, you’ll need a new inverter.
Answer #5
I have done the above suggestions and when you plug and external monitor in it works fine and loads up in to windows.
I will try the shining of a torch on it, if the inverter has gone I should be able to see whats on the screen I take it? and If I cant then the screen is most likely duff?

Correct. It could still be the ribbon or even be the connection on the board, but this point it’s most likely to be the inverter or the LCD.
