Answer #4

it erased a hard drive, i want store files on it.. but now since killdisk erased it.. the drive isnt being picked up in my computer
Answer #5
killdisk does exactly what it say’s, the reason that your computer is not picking it up is because it erased your disk, which you can re load windows on it by booting from windows cd.

I cant boot from a cd, as this is an old non sata drive, and my mother board only has one plug for it, so i cant run my cd and disk a same time..
and i dont want to pu txp on it
i want to use it as a blank storage disc
any ideas?? thanks

Yes, it does!
and my mother board only has one plug for it, so i cant run my cd and disk a same time.
Of course you can! Every IDE port allows two IDE drives, you need to use the proper cable.
I get the idea that you’re not very skilled with computers, in that case you shouldn’t be using programs like killdisk.
Answer #8
Of course it does! It may not have a shortcut in the Start Menu but it exists. Open up the Control Panel, or hit F3 to search your files.
Or use a pratition editor program.

Answer #11

Answer #12

Answer #17
i would sugest reformatting your haddrive with windows or use DBAN found here:
http://www.dban.org/
Answer #18
If you have bandwidth enough you can try Ubuntu. Maybe Ubuntu can recognize your hard drive. Try to format it into Ubuntu and than check it again in Windows. Yuu can boot Ubuntu from a USB w/o a problem.
Answer #19
how did you use killdisk, a bootable CD ?
you have Hiren’s BootCD ?
boot to it an use a partition app like “paragon partition mgr” and see if that finds it
Answer #20
thanks all for your help.. i’ll get about trying these suggestions..
failing that.. perhaps the hard drive is faulty.. could happen i guess
Answer #21
This is nothing unusual,Erasing an HDD this way more or less
make it like new from the factory,You don’t get a partition
automatically when you hookup a new HDD,That’s because they come flat out empty.. You need to create a new partition. You should use windows disk management for that
(Start>>Run>>Diskmgmt.msc) Or a 3rd party partition manager such as paragon hard disk
manager or acronis disk director,But the windows one will do just fine.

so killdisk is a dangerous peice of software? and actually can 'kill a disk'?

Absolutely not,It just erases it beyond recovery.
Answer #22
i know you want to use the hard drive for a storage disk anyway, but can you get a hard drive caddy and then put the hard drive in that and then connect a firewire lead to your computer and see if it finds the drive then??
Answer #23

Nobody has given you wrong instructions, because by default Administrative Tools is indeed in control panel as correctly claimed:

surely a man of ure expertise known that sum windows are layed out diffrently..
mine isnt like yours..
And by the way.. I KNOW all cables have have two plugs on them.. but for some reason, when i connect both my hard drive and cd drive to it, they both dont get picked up.
anyway, thanks all…
i’ll borrow a mates hard drive cradle and see if it gets picked up from there.

You need to set the jumpers correctly for the master and slave device on the ide cable, ide devices require correct jumper pin settings.
Answer #26
download http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
and try to format it

by golly youve got it.
I feel an idiot, but the reason i didnt check that was becasue when there was stuff on the disc, it was being picked up in my computer, but when it was erased, it dissapeared, this threw me as i didnt change the jumpers, so thougth it couldnt be that.
So anyway, i managed to boot from disk(after changing the jumper to slave), then format the drive with windows and bingo, a nice big empty hard drive.
i apologise all for my stupidity.. its nothing new, but hopefully i learnt sumthing.
Thanks
Answer #28
when trying to use the wiped HDD check on bios to see if the HDD is being detected there. (or if your quick enough you’ll see it when it loads IDE etc at the load up screen just after you switch the comp on. To access BIOs you usually press something like ‘Del’ or an ‘F#’ key during the boot screen).
If you’d been using this HDD as your OS HDD it may also be worth checking the ‘jumper’ which is a little pin on the back of the HDD between the power input and IDE connection. You’ll want it to be set to CS which is cable select (there’s usually a little diagram on the HDD showing how to use the jumper).
If the above doesnt help, check the following:
* ensure things are connected correctly (old IDE connections do tend to wiggle loose)
* younger OSes have had a problem detecting HDDs because the letter allocation was already taken. I’ve not heard of this problem with XP. The solution with this was to reassign drive letters IIRC

I have a SATA drive, does it requires jumpers? btw i am planning to use Kill-Disk to empty the only SATA drive installed on my PC, then boot up Windows CD and install Windows, do you think it will work?

I need to delete all data completely, then reinstall Windows!
Answer #32
This is actually more common than you think. It happens when a hard drive is on it’s way out, it’s essentially like copying over each sector and then formatting.
Your HD was likely on it’s way out and the low level format just accelerated what was inevitable.

pop in a mac, it will likely pick it up applications>utilities>disk utility.app all tools to do what you want partitioning the volume with correct tables.

From he’s describing it’s not an issue because of a corrupt or unpartitioned volume.
When there is physical damage to a drive the bios won’t even read it. I’ve seen it happen before after a low level format. Hard drives only have X amount of hours writing/accessing data before they fail.
