Internet works but not the browsers?

December 26th, 2013

Hello, I have recently moved in a japanese family, and I am trying to access the internet with my notebook (windows XP, firewall deactivated). I can actually locate and connect to their modem by WIFI, so my PC tells me I am connected and should be able to browse the net. But when I try using firefox or IE I always get the same error (connection failed).
Same problem if I connect directly using an ethernet cable.
Then I went in the cmd box and tested it’s ping to www.google.com and it works with 0% of loss, at an average speed of 50 ms and a TIL of 45 (whatever that means). So basically there shouldn’t be any problem here right?
I’ve already tried a bunch of things, would anyone have an idea of what could be the problem?
Thanks!

Check your browser’s proxy settings! Could be spyware that changed it too,Might wanna run a scan with malware bytes.
On a side note I’d like to point out that not using any firewall at all is a bad practice,Using comodo would be best.
Answer #2
Hmm, firefox’s proxy was enabled. Did a full virus check with Avira and no positive results. (I use avira’s firewall by the way)
Even after setting it to ‘no proxy’ the error is the same…
Oh and the network is a non-secured one by the way, don’t know if it has any thing to do with it
Thanks for helping!

TTL stand for time to live, its the number of hops the packet is allowed to make before its killed in order to prevent them from infinitely looping around a network. Just in case you were still curious : P
Answer #4
what country are you connecting from?
Answer #5
Open CMD
Type in “netsh winsock reset”
Reboot and see if it works.
Answer #6
After you switched off the proxy,Did you close the window and then rechecked? Some spywares can be persistent.
I still recommend you do a scan with malware bytes,Also,It’s very possible your firewall is improperly configured and is blocking
it,You should definitely look it,But for the record,Your firewall is no good,See this chart:

This can only be useful when the connection doesn’t work and have limited connectivity,Which is not the case here,He’s able
to ping google just fine,It’s probably just his firewall.

I wouldn’t rely on that site personally, although it can point you in the direction of what may be better. Some of the tests they performed are over 6 months old, and they even state,
The report's results are
valid at the day of the report's release and are not guaranteed to be valid after that day.

Thank you for the help everyone!
I used the spybot search & destroy to get rid of three spywares, then uninstalled Firefox without keeping the personal data. After reinstallation it just got to work (even IE).
Thanks, it’s good to see helpful souls on this board!
